On 18 July 2024, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) marked Nelson Mandela International Day with a collaborative effort aimed at enhancing campus cleanliness and fostering environmental stewardship. The Student Life and Governance department led a dedicated 67-minute clean-up drive involving staff and students.
The day began at the VUT Amphitheatre, where a diverse group of participants including all VUT Faculties, the Student Representative Council (SRC), Green Campus Initiative (GCI), Bantu Hub, Campus TV, Enactus, ZCCS, Creative Arts faculties, as well as OHS, Protection Services, Student Counselling, Residence Living and Learning, VUT Clinic, and IHAU gathered to kick off the program. Dr. Trishana Soni, acting Director for Student Life and Governance, opened the event with a call to action, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a clean and eco-friendly campus.
The SRC President, Mr. Ntwanano Hlongwane, extended a warm welcome to the students while the GCI Chairperson Mr. Carcidio Khoza led a pledge to uphold environmental principles. Khoza highlighted GCI’s efforts in promoting sustainability and encouraged students to adopt eco-friendly practices such as energy and water conservation, hygiene, recycling, and waste reduction.
A standout feature of the event was a performance by Ikhetho Elikhulu, who presented a theatre piece focused on proper waste disposal. The performance illustrated the correct use of waste bins for plastics, bottles, and cans, reinforcing the day’s educational objectives.
Following the opening session, students were divided into groups representing the four faculties. Each group, guided by designated leaders, was tasked with cleaning different blocks of the campus for a dedicated 67 minutes. The enthusiastic participation of staff and students contributed significantly to the success of the initiative.
After the first phase of the campaign participants gathered at the amphitheatre for refreshments before moving on to VUT’s main residence.
In addition to the general clean-up, some students, alongside members of Bantu Talent and GCI, dedicated additional time to a special renovation project. This team undertook the task of renovating a student room. Although they were unable to complete the work in one day due to time constraints and the need for paint to dry between coats, they planned to return the next day to finish the project.
The campaign was a success, and highlighted the university’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
