Katlego Mahlasela, a current student of Public Relations Management at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) and is making waves in both her academic journey and her mission to uplift women’s socio-economic rights. Hailing from Mpumalanga but raised in East Rand, Katlego is a sister to two girls and one boy, summarizing a blend of diverse experiences and perspectives.

She describes her VUT journey as having been an incredible odyssey which introduced her to the media realm through VUT initiatives. While at it she found her passion in Public Relations (PR), which set her on a transformative path. A pivotal moment was an assignment involving building a YouTube channel under media studies. She has shared that this challenge propelled her to hone her presentation skills, subsequently leading her to MC various events and join VUT Campus TV. Her drive and dedication landed her the role of a Nokia brand ambassador and a content manager and presenter for VUT Campus TV, not to mention her role in the De Great Podcast.

Notably, she will take Centre stage as the MC for Mr and Miss VUT soon, a platform which will allow her to showcase her multifaceted talents.

Katlego envisions a future where she becomes a globetrotting presenter, advocating for underprivileged youth, particularly those with unexplored business aspirations. Her ambition extends to creating a company that bridges these young minds with platforms, fostering their growth and innovation through a television show that combines her passion with transformative impact. As a content creator, she seeks to communicate her creativity while inspiring others.

Speaking in the context of “Women’s Socio-Economic Rights and Empowerment: Building Back Better for Women’s Improved Resilience,” Katlego emphasizes the paramount importance of addressing gender disparities in economic opportunities. “Championing women’s economic empowerment not only uplifts individuals but also bolsters societal resilience and advancement. By championing equal access to education, healthcare, employment, and financial resources, societies can fortify women’s ability to overcome challenges and contribute meaningfully to their communities, she said. She further added that, “This approach aligns seamlessly with the idea of “building back better,” underscoring the need to create more inclusive and equitable systems in the aftermath of crises.”
