The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is once again hosting one of South Africa’s most revered youth rugby tournaments, the annual Rhino Rugby Week. The much-anticipated annual tournament will be played at VUT’s historic and esteemed Isak Steyl Stadium from 18 June right through 6 July 2024.
Over the years, the Isak Steyl Stadium has become a facility to be reckoned with and has positioned itself as one of the resources in the Vaal region that is keeping the sports fraternity alive. The Stadium is preferred by many professional clubs and organisations because of its well-maintained facilities and safe environment on offer. One of its regular features is the Rhino Rugby Week. What began with just a dozen teams in 2015 has evolved into a premier event on South Africa’s youth rugby calendar, drawing over one hundred (100) teams from primary and secondary schools across the country. The tournament’s exponential growth underscores its importance in nurturing young rugby talent and promoting the sport’s values of teamwork, discipline, and excellence.
Dr. Sibusiso Mchunu, the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Resources and Planning at VUT, expressed the university’s pride in hosting such a prestigious event. Addressing a gathered audience of athletes, coaches, and supporters during the tournament’s official opening on 19 June, Dr. Mchunu emphasized the tournament’s recognition by esteemed bodies such as the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), South African Rugby Union (SARU), and Gauteng Sports. “We are honoured to be associated with the Rhino Rugby Week,” remarked Dr. Mchunu. “This event not only showcases the best young rugby talent in South Africa but also aligns perfectly with VUT’s commitment to sports development and community engagement.”
The preparation for this grand event has been a collaborative effort, with the VUT Sports Office and dedicated colleagues working tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly. Their commitment has been instrumental in creating a conducive environment where young athletes can showcase their skills and sportsmanship. For VUT, the week tournament also presents a great recruitment platform due to the scores of young people it draws.
For VUT and the wider community, hosting Rugby Rhino Week is not just about sports—it’s about celebrating youth, promoting excellence, and inspiring future generations of rugby stars. As the event continues to grow, its impact on South African rugby and the lives of young athletes remains profound, ensuring that the spirit of the game continues to thrive.
The stage is set for again another fantastic celebration of sport and the everlasting spirit of rugby in South Africa with Rhino Rugby Week at VUT.
