A group of dedicated female academics from the Department of Human Resource Management (HRM) at Vaal University of Technology (VUT) celebrated this year’s Mandela Day with a heartwarming project called “Beanies for Preemies.” This initiative, which began in January, saw the group coming together to knit a total of two-hundred and fifty (250) beanies for premature babies.
The project culminated in a special event where these handmade beanies were donated to the maternity wards at Kopanong and Sebokeng Public Hospitals. According to the donors, the management and staff of these hospitals were immensely supportive, ensuring the beanies reached the tiny recipients who needed them most. “Their cooperation and enthusiasm were crucial in making the project a success, and their commitment to the well-being of their patients was deeply appreciated. They said discussions among various stakeholders highlighted the importance of continued involvement and support for such initiatives, adding that it became clear that there is a strong desire to maintain and expand this project in the future, ensuring that more preemies receive the warmth and care they need.
The day concluded with a touching piece of advice from Matron Ellen Manale, the Head of the Neo-Natal Unit at Sebokeng Hospital, who reminded everyone that no good deed is ever too small. Through this initiative, the female academics demonstrated the power of community and the profound impact of small acts of kindness. Mandela Day was not only a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s legacy but also a reminder of the difference we can all make when we come together for a common cause.
