Recently, staff from the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) department of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), hosted learners from Suncrest High School on a digital upskilling mission. The visit, which is one of the department’s community engagement projects aimed to bridge the digital divide by assisting a total of 35 Grade 12 learners with university applications, with VUT as the first option.
The ICT team delivered informative presentations, taking the learners through the intricate steps and essential information required for successful university applications. From understanding the application process, to gathering necessary documents and completing online forms, the learners were guided with utmost care and dedication – something which was met with overwhelming positive feedback from the learners.
This project highlights the power of collaboration and inclusivity in addressing community needs, leaving a positive impact on both institutions. Mr Andrew Brown, an ICT Lecturer stated that further initiatives are planned to continue making a difference in the local community. “The project’s success highlights the dedication of the ICT team in fostering stronger connections and partnerships within the Vaal community, addressing critical needs like digital skilling and online applications,” he said.
