Emerging VUT soccer star wins the 2023 Varsity Cup’s FNB Player of the Tournament

Ntokozo Mgidi, a dedicated Retail Business Management student of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), emerged as the shining star of the 2023 Varsity Cup season. With an outstanding performance that included netting an impressive 5 goals, Mgidi clinched the coveted 2023 First National Bank (FNB) Player of the Tournament award.
Hailing from KwaThema, in Ekurhuleni, East of Johannesburg, Mgidi’s journey to this achievement was far from easy. He attributes his success to a combination of unwavering determination, hard work, and fervent prayers. “I always knew what I wanted and kept pushing myself. Winning was beyond my expectations, but the overwhelming support I received from fellow players, the entire VUT community, as well as friends and family, played a significant role in my victory. I am immensely grateful for their unwavering support,” Mgidi expressed.
Mgidi draws inspiration from the legendary Lionel Messi, acknowledging that while he may not reach Messi’s heights, he aspires to be one of the best, someone who people talk about with admiration and respect.
Thabang Rooi, VUT FC Head Coach, expressed immense pride in Mgidi’s accomplishments. “For the past two seasons of the Varsity Cup, he has demonstrated remarkable dedication. Last season, he contended for the title of Player of the Tournament, and this season, he fulfilled his promise of being even better. His outstanding performance earned him a spot with Sundowns (M Tigers), proving to many that self-improvement is achievable with determination. I am truly proud of this young man,” Rooi praised Ntokozo.
