With a wealth of experience in strategic planning, institutional governance, and higher education operations, Ms Rathopo takes this role critically as VUT continues to navigate transformation and innovation within the sector.

A seasoned professional, Ms Rathopo holds a BCom degree in Informatics and Economics from the University of Pretoria, a Postgraduate Diploma from UNISA, and a Master’s in Business Leadership (MBL) from UNISA: School of Business Leadership. She began her Doctor of Business Leadership (DBL) in 2024.

Before joining VUT, she was a strategic planner within UNISA’s Department of Institutional Intelligence, gaining valuable experience in institutional research, risk management, business intelligence, and governance frameworks.

Both professional aspiration and a sense of social responsibility drove Ms Rathopo’s decision to join VUT. “From a distance, I was aware of the institution’s challenges in recent years, and I saw an opportunity to contribute meaningfully and help restore stability using my expertise in strategic planning and results-driven management,” she explains.

Having worked extensively in higher education, including a significant tenure at the University of South Africa (UNISA), Ms Rathopo was drawn to the vibrant and idea-rich environment that universities create, particularly intrigued by how a university of technology differentiates itself from traditional and comprehensive institutions.

Since assuming her duties two months ago, Ms Rathopo has supported the Vice-Chancellor in key areas such as governance, institutional reporting, strategic initiatives, project planning, fiscal oversight, and operational coordination. “My role is both strategic and operational, ensuring the VC’s Office runs efficiently and supports the broader institutional goals,” she notes.

Bringing a rich background in strategic planning and institutional support, Ms Rathopo believes her strong work ethic, service-oriented approach, and resilience are vital to this role. “I value positivity, integrity, and a results-oriented mindset; qualities that align with the transformation vision of the VC’s Office,” she adds.

Ms Rathopo views her role as instrumental in advancing VUT’s strategic goals, particularly in strengthening governance and enabling innovation. She aims to contribute to transforming institutional processes and creating agile, transparent systems that support academic and operational excellence.

In the immediate term, she focuses on streamlining operations within the Vice-Chancellor’s Office for improved service delivery. Over the long term, she plans to complete her Doctor of Business Leadership (DBL) degree by 2026 while playing a meaningful role in advancing VUT’s vision for an inclusive, innovative, and sustainable future.

Ms Rathopo believes collaboration is rooted in open communication, trust, and a shared purpose. “It’s about defining clear roles, leveraging strengths, listening actively, and creating opportunities for all to contribute meaningfully. Regularly sharing progress, including challenges, helps cultivate a collaborative and accountable work culture,” she says.

Guided by self-awareness, empowerment, active listening, and resilience principles, Ms Rathopo emphasises that leadership is about investing in people’s growth and fostering a positive, inclusive environment. “We all succeed when we uplift others. Gatekeeping limits progress, but mentorship and empowerment build institutions,” she affirms.

As she embarks on this new chapter, Ms Rathopo shares a heartfelt message with the VUT community: “I am both honoured and excited to join this institution. I aim to contribute meaningfully to VUT’s strategic vision and help build an environment grounded in transparency, excellence, and collaboration. Together, we can shape a future for VUT that is innovative, inclusive, and impactful.”

As VUT strengthens its leadership and governance structures, Ms Rathopo’s appointment signals a renewed commitment to strategic transformation and operational excellence.

“Meet Maureen Rathopo, the new manager in VUT Vice Chancellor’s office, bringing strategic leadership, innovation, and a vision for institutional […]

[47

post-23739","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology
["GET
