On 28 July 2025, Vaal University of Technology (VUT) FM hosted a board induction workshop at the VUT Conference Centre. The session aimed to ensure that all board members understood their roles, responsibilities and governance obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Jacob Thamaga, Chairperson of the Board, Manager of African Languages and VUT FM Board Treasurer, opened the event by welcoming guests warmly and expressing his appreciation for their attendance. He remarked, \u201cIt is truly encouraging to see the full board in attendance; this already demonstrates your commitment and readiness to serve with diligence and purpose.\u201d He added that the workshop would define the scope within which the board can constructively contribute to the development of the station without overstepping or underplaying its mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facilitator Mr Raymond Mojapelo, an accomplished broadcaster, journalist and media leader, began with an overview of the broadcasting legislative framework. He highlighted the importance of understanding the relevant laws to ensure that board decisions align with regulatory requirements. The discussion also covered the station\u2019s current organogram and structures, identifying areas that may need review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Mojapelo guided participants through their roles and responsibilities, underscoring the importance of a shared vision, mission, aims and objectives. \u201cThe reason they are essential,\u201d he explained, \u201cis because they are the first identifiers of who we are.\u201d He expanded on the board\u2019s strategic role, its responsibility in securing a licence and the difference between ownership and control within broadcasting operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further explained the role of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) in providing regulatory oversight, reminding members that accountability ultimately lies with the community. The session also addressed compliance requirements, different types of broadcasting licences and considerations for expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop explored how committees and subcommittees can strengthen board efficiency and the value of adopting structured approaches tailored to the station\u2019s environment. A question-and-answer session highlighted that not all queries have immediate answers, with Mr Mojapelo advising the board to focus on what can be addressed while recognising the limits of current knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closing the event, Ms Nondumiso Lufele, Director for Stakeholder Engagement, thanked the facilitator for his time and expertise and expressed gratitude to board members for their active participation.
