The initiative aimed to strengthen partnerships between academic staff and local communities, advancing practical research that responds to real-world needs and contributes to societal development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her welcoming address, Prof Nobukhosi Dlodlo, Head of the MRS Department, highlighted the importance of expanding students\u2019 perspectives through applied learning. She stressed the department\u2019s commitment to creating platforms that bridge theory and practice. \u201cOur role, especially in higher education, is to expand the students\u2019 perspective. Workshops like this enable us to empower students to apply their knowledge effectively beyond the classroom,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Modiehi Morakile, Project Manager for Community Engagement, praised the MRS Department\u2019s contribution to community education. She noted how the department equips both VUT students and learners from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges with knowledge that is otherwise inaccessible. \u201cThis knowledge does more than inform; it elevates a university of technology to be not only a regional leader but also a global player in education and innovation,\u201d Morakile added. She underlined the importance of knowledge-sharing beyond academic silos to benefit both the university and society at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Confidence Booi, Lecturer in the MRS Department, emphasised the practical value of the day\u2019s activities. He pointed out how insights gained could be incorporated into the curriculum to enhance student learning and academic outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key highlight was a presentation by Mr Thabang Motau, MRS lecturer, who demonstrated website development using WordPress. He encouraged participants to approach learning with a hands-on mindset. Explaining that WordPress is a free and open-source platform widely used for business websites, e-commerce platforms, blogs and portfolios, Motau showcased how digital tools can be applied in both academic and entrepreneurial contexts. Participants actively engaged by scanning QR codes to complete quizzes and interactive exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop concluded with participants reflecting on their learning experiences and offering suggestions for future sessions.
