The event marked a significant milestone in cultivating a vibrant research culture within the faculty.

The Acting Executive Dean of FACS, Dr Nolutho Mkhumbeni, expressed enthusiasm for this pioneering initiative, describing it as “a perfect practice as a formal access process of postgraduate studies, and we hope to do it annually.” She emphasised the faculty’s commitment to nurturing an active research community, extending heartfelt appreciation to the supervisors, promoters, and organisers who ensured the event’s success.

Professor Tranos Zuva, FACS Research Professor, outlined the viva process and its objectives. He explained that no marks are currently awarded during these sessions, as they are designed as private, developmental exercises. “Before taking this to a new form, it is important to start with private presentations so participants can observe and improve,” he noted. Professor Zuva also underscored the broader ambition: to identify promising research projects that could lead to commissioned studies or even marketable products.

Throughout the day, candidates presented their research in detailed sessions, engaging with faculty and peers through constructive recommendations, advice, and questions to identify areas for improvement. To acknowledge their dedication, participants received certificates and vouchers as tokens of recognition and encouragement.

As the event concluded, Professor Zuva announced plans for a post-event survey to gather feedback. This input will be invaluable in assessing the success of the inaugural faculty viva presentations and in guiding improvements for future iterations.

The launch of this programme reflects VUT’s ongoing commitment to elevating postgraduate research standards, promoting academic excellence, and equipping students to deliver impactful, high-quality research outcomes.

“VUT’s Faculty of Applied & Computer Sciences held its first Exit/Viva Presentations for postgrads, fostering research culture and academic excellence.” […]

[47

post-27905","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology
["GET
