Others begin with a gap that refuses to be ignored. For Dr Lerato Simelane, it was both. On 24 April 2026, during the final day of the Autumn Graduation Ceremonies at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Biotechnology, joining the University’s 60th generation of graduates. Her work does more than fulfil an academic requirement. It contributes to how South Africa understands and protects its wildlife.

Her study, Diversity of Microsatellite and Toll like Receptor Loci in South African Antelopes, explores the genetic foundations of biodiversity, focusing on how variation within species can influence survival, resilience, and vulnerability to disease. In a country where conservation is both a scientific and national priority, her research offers insight into how wildlife populations can be better understood and protected.

“There was a gap in the research for the topic I am working on,” said Dr Simelane, describing the moment she recognised the need for deeper investigation. “That is when I realised, I needed to contribute towards closing it.” What followed was a journey defined by patience, precision, and a commitment to producing knowledge that matters beyond the laboratory.

Her academic path was shaped early on. Growing up in a home where both parents were educators and doctoral graduates, the pursuit of a PhD was always visible as a possibility. Yet, visibility does not remove the work required. It only sets the standard. For Dr Simelane, reaching that level demanded focus, discipline, and the willingness to navigate challenges that extended far beyond academic theory.

Like many researchers of her generation, her work was disrupted by the realities of the COVID 19 pandemic. Limited access to resources, delays in data collection, and the slow pace of progress tested her resolve. Research that relies on precision does not easily adapt to interruption. It requires continuity, and when that continuity is broken, progress must be rebuilt.

At the same time, her journey unfolded within another equally demanding role. As a mother of two young children, she carried responsibilities that extended far beyond her research. In those moments where the demands of academia and family intersected, her children became a source of motivation rather than limitation.

“My children kept me going,” she said, a simple reflection that captures the deeper balance many women in science continue to navigate. She also credits her family for their constant support, describing their encouragement and prayers as a steady presence throughout her journey.

Now stepping beyond her doctoral achievement, Dr Simelane is focused on applying her expertise within the industry, ensuring that her research translates into real world impact. Alongside her academic work, she continues to grow Love Lee Enterprise, a beauty focused initiative aimed at creating opportunities for women to build and sustain their own businesses. It is a reminder that her journey is not confined to a single path but shaped by both scientific inquiry and community upliftment.

“Just do not give up. Keep going. The results are worth it,” she advised, speaking from experience rather than theory.

As part of VUT’s 60th generation of graduates, her story reflects more than individual success. It speaks to a broader narrative of graduates who are not only advancing knowledge but doing so while navigating real life complexities. Her work in conservation science stands as a contribution to a field that depends on both precision and purpose, where understanding genetics today may determine the survival of species tomorrow.

In the end, her journey is not only about closing a gap in research. It is about opening new possibilities, for science, for conservation, and for those who will follow.

“Dr Lerato Simelane earns a PhD in Biotechnology at VUT, advancing antelope genetic research while balancing motherhood and academic demands.” […]

[47,1

post-36062","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology","category-uncategorized
["GET
