It begins in classrooms where ambition is still taking root. On 29 and 30 April 2026, the Student Recruitment Office from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) took a deliberate step in securing that future by visiting two key schools as part of its “Road to 60 Years” milestone campaign.

The outreach programme saw recruiters engaging directly with Grade 12 learners at Sasolburg Technical High School and Riverside High School in Vereeniging, delivering critical information about higher education opportunities. The sessions were designed not only to inform but also to inspire, as learners were introduced to the wide range of courses offered at VUT, the admission requirements, and the importance of early application.

Central to the discussions was a detailed breakdown of the Admission Point Score (APS), a key university entry requirement that many learners often misunderstand. Recruiters ensured that learners left with clarity on how their subject choices and results directly influence their eligibility for various programmes. Equally important was guidance on application timelines, with strong emphasis placed on applying early to avoid disappointment.

Recruitment Officer Mr Sennanyane Masike from VUT reinforced this message, stressing that the initiative forms part of the University’s long-term vision. He explained that building strong academic pipelines requires consistent engagement with schools and learners well before they reach university level. “It is very important to apply on time so that you secure your space,” he said, highlighting the competitive nature of university admissions.

The visit also carried emotional significance for educators, particularly those with personal ties to the institution. Mrs Sunel Van Sihert, a teacher at Sasolburg Technical High School and a proud VUT alumna, welcomed the initiative warmly. She expressed her appreciation for the University’s continued presence in schools, noting that the experience remains meaningful for both educators and learners. “As an old student of VUT myself, it is always good to have you here at our school. The experience is always welcoming, we enjoy having you,” she said.

For learners, the visit was both eye opening and thought provoking. Grade 12 learner Mr Jason Jorse described the session as informative and challenging, as it sparked deeper reflection on his future. “VUT came to give an informative talk about what we need to apply, and now I am leaving the room with questions,” he admitted, an indication that the session achieved its goal of encouraging critical thinking and planning.

As VUT advances along its Road to 60, initiatives such as these underscore a deeper institutional commitment to access, inclusion, and impact. This is not merely outreach. It is a deliberate act of nation building, where information becomes opportunity, and opportunity becomes possibility. By

meeting learners where they are, the University is shaping futures, one classroom at a time.

”VUT Recruitment Office visited Sasolburg Technical High and Riverside High in Vereeniging, guiding Grade 12 learners on APS, courses, and […]

[47

post-36184","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology
["GET
