The Future is no longer approaching; it has arrived, and the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is determined to ensure that Africa plays a leading role in shaping it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 15 May 2026, innovators, educators, industry leaders, students, and technology pioneers gathered at the Emerald Resort & Casino for the Metaverse Academy XR Summit, hosted by VUT in partnership with CXI-Africa and supported through European Union collaboration initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit offered a bold glimpse into a rapidly evolving world driven by Extended Reality (XR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), immersive learning, and digital innovation, technologies that are redefining education, healthcare, manufacturing, conservation, engineering, and the future workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening the summit, VUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Khehla Ndlovu, described the gathering as \u201ca meeting of imagination, innovation and responsibility,\u201d emphasising that Africa must not merely consume future technologies but actively shape and lead them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He highlighted that the summit aligns with VUT\u2019s Strategy 2033+, which positions the institution as a leader in digitally smart industrial transformation and innovation. \u201cAs VUT celebrates 60 years of existence, we are entering a new chapter where African universities are no longer passive observers of global technological shifts, but active architects of them,\u201d said Prof Ndlovu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit showcased how immersive technologies are moving beyond entertainment and becoming practical tools for solving real-world challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The keynote speaker, Mr Ulrico Grech-Cumbo, who is the Founder and CEO of HABITATXR, captivated delegates with examples of how XR technologies are being used globally to transform conservation, education, and human connection. He presented on “The Future is Immersive: Real-World Impact of XRof XR Technologies.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through HABITATXR\u2019s groundbreaking projects across 19 countries, audiences explored how virtual experiences are enabling people to encounter endangered wildlife, interact with holographic ecosystems, and access environments previously inaccessible due to cost, geography, or infrastructure limitations. \u201cXR technologies are the only tools in human history capable of transforming people from passive observers into active participants,\u201d explained Mr Grech-Cumbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His presentation demonstrated how immersive experiences are helping communities reconnect with nature while driving awareness, empathy, and behavioural change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit also highlighted how South Africa is rapidly expanding immersive learning opportunities across multiple sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Daniel Naidoo from CXI-Africa explained how XR technologies are already being used to train municipal workers, simulate mining emergencies, prepare healthcare professionals, and support technical education. \u201cIn South Africa, immersive learning represents more than technological innovation, it represents access, opportunity, and hope,\u201d said Mr Naidoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further explained how virtual simulations are helping bridge the gap between theoretical education and practical workplace experience, particularly for young people entering the digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The VUT Metaverse Academy project itself emerged as one of the summit\u2019s most exciting milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by Professor Anneke de Klerk, the initiative has already developed a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform dedicated to XR learning, visual storytelling, animation, digital design, and immersive media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The academy aims to create accessible digital skills training while strengthening partnerships between academia, industry, and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project has also opened doors for student innovation through incubator programmes and industry-linked experiential learning opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the technical demonstrations, the summit carried a deeper message about Africa\u2019s role in the global digital Future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speakers repeatedly stressed that immersive technologies are not simply about gadgets or futuristic experiences; they are about solving human problems, expanding access to education, driving economic inclusion, and creating sustainable innovation ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delegates explored demonstrations involving digital twins, immersive classrooms, virtual tourism, industrial safety simulations, holographic conservation experiences, AI-integrated interfaces, and augmented reality storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussions revealed how XR technologies are becoming increasingly relevant to sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail, architecture, agriculture, education, tourism, and public infrastructure management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recurring theme throughout the summit was the importance of collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry leaders, researchers, educators, and government stakeholders called for stronger partnerships to ensure that Africa develops not only consumers of technology, but creators, innovators, and digitally fluent leaders capable of shaping the industries of tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many students attending the summit, it was their opportunity to experience immersive technology beyond social media or gaming, and the impact was immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis experience was educational and showed us how XR can improve lives and help address future challenges,\u201d said Grade 8 learner Ms Karabo Mohapi from Dr Molefi Oliphant School of Specialisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fellow Grade 8 learner Ms Lindelwa Muyambo added: \u201cThe programme taught us how virtual and augmented reality can help build a better future for people around the world. It inspired me to believe that through technology, we can change the world if we work hard together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The learners further shared their vision for the Future of XR, expressing their ambition to one day develop a water-powered engine through immersive technology solutions to positively impact communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students moved between live XR demonstrations, virtual simulations, immersive storytelling installations and interactive digital environments that showcased what future careers could look like in the Fifth Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students tested virtual reality headsets for the first time. In contrast, others explored digital twins, holographic experiences, and AI-powered applications that let them interact with simulated environments in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As immersive technologies continue to redefine global economies, VUT\u2019s Metaverse Academy XR Summit demonstrated that the continent is ready to participate boldly in the Fifth Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, the summit affirmed that the Future of technology in Africa will not simply be imported; it will be imagined, designed, and led by Africans themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
