The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted its 2026 Open Day on 23 May 2026 as part of ongoing student recruitment initiatives aimed at introducing prospective learners and parents to the institution\u2019s academic programmes, facilities and student support services. The event, which also formed part of the University\u2019s 60th anniversary celebrations, welcomed schools from across the region to engage with faculties, students, staff members and alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the visitors was Mrs Tshwanelo Rantho, a VUT alumna who graduated in 2001 with a Diploma in Computer Systems when the institution was still widely known as \u201cVaal-Tech\u201d. Returning to campus with her children, Mrs Rantho reflected on the transformation and development that have taken place at the University since her years as a student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a lot of improvement. It has grown significantly,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I studied here, the Computer Science facilities were limited compared to what I see today. The faculty has expanded, and the infrastructure now reflects modern standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Open Day also provided prospective students with an opportunity to hear directly from former students about the value of studying at VUT. Mrs Rantho explained that the qualification she obtained from the institution contributed positively to her professional journey after graduation and strengthened her confidence when applying for employment opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter graduation, it was not difficult to find a job,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I presented my qualifications, I was confident because I came from this institution. I could apply anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having studied and worked within the Vaal region, Mrs Rantho encouraged learners attending the Open Day to recognise the opportunities available through local institutions. She emphasised the importance of higher education in empowering communities and preparing graduates for the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am from the Vaal, I studied at Vaal-Tech, and I worked in the Vaal,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is potential here. Learners should go out there and be recognised because of VUT.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Open Day formed part of VUT\u2019s broader efforts to strengthen engagement with schools, parents and communities while showcasing academic offerings, infrastructure development and student support services. As the University commemorates six decades of existence, alumni experiences such as Mrs Rantho\u2019s continue to reflect the institution\u2019s contribution to education, professional development and community advancement within the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
