As the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) began its Spring Graduation ceremonies on 14 September 2026, the University’s 60th Diamond Jubilee year continued to recognise its students’ achievements. Among the graduates is Mr Uhone Luruli, who graduated cum laude with a Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology.

Hailing from Mutale, Limpopo, Mr Luruli did not see himself as the smartest student in his class. However, he grew up in a family that placed strong value on education and encouraged him to take his studies seriously. The example set by his family influenced his approach to his own academic journey.

With several family members having achieved cum laude, the distinction became a benchmark for him. Although he worked towards it, he did not expect to reach the milestone. “I did really work hard for it,” he said.

Balancing his studies with employment presented another challenge. Mr Luruli had to manage his academic responsibilities alongside his work, with examination periods becoming particularly demanding when his workload increased. He nevertheless continued to balance the two.

Support from those around him also contributed to his progress. He describes the relationships among students as an important part of their success, as they encouraged one another to achieve their best. His lecturers also helped him work through difficult topics, reinforcing his view that challenges in IT can be addressed through teamwork and guidance.

His experience also highlighted the importance of communication within the IT field. Working with people from different backgrounds and across different teams requires professionals to communicate their ideas clearly and contribute effectively to shared tasks.

Graduation is not the end of Mr Luruli’s academic plans. He intends to pursue a Master’s next year and hopes to continue his studies at VUT.

Reflecting on graduating during the University’s 60th year, Mr Luruli described the achievement as an honour and a source of motivation for his future. He encouraged students to choose areas they are passionate about, remain focused and take their journeys one day at a time.

His achievement forms part of student success being recognised during VUT’s 60th year. More importantly, his journey demonstrates how academic achievement can be sustained alongside work, with support from peers, lecturers and family. His decision to pursue further study also reflects the continued role VUT can play in supporting students beyond their initial qualification.
