Lakeside Secondary School learners cheered in excitement as one of their own received a prize from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) for his invention.
Andile Maimetsa, a Grade 12 learner at the school, entered a competition that ran for three months (June to end of August) in the Vaal Info Publication under the Mavuti Voice section. The students had to identify a problem relating to energy in their community, that they can solve. Students had to make an alternative energy source by using recycled materials. Andile, together with his grade 11 friends, George Bahetane and Hector Mokoatle came up with a solar bulb that will help them study when there is no electricity.
The invention was tested and approved as one that really works. A shocked Andile said he was honoured to receive the prizes on behalf of the team, “I am excited about this achievement and thank you to the team that worked with me on this.
Deputy Principal, Mr Happy Ntoi encouraged the learners to take any opportunity that comes their way and that they should take this as a source of inspiration. “The community of Lakeside is a community of achievers … the world is full of opportunities, grab them with both hands,” he said.
Principal David Nkitseng thanked the VUT for recognising talent from the school. He said that the learners should make use of the talent they have. “I am very excited on his behalf, as through learning and perseverance, they can unearth their skills and talent to achieve even more,” he said.
