Preparing for your first-year examinations can be a daunting task, especially if you’re transitioning from high school to university. The increased workload, new environment, and heightened expectations require a strategic approach to study and time management.
With this in mind, Ms Lerato Motloung, the Academic Advisor for the Faculty of Human Sciences at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently led examinations preparation session for first years in the Faculty.
According to Ms. Motloung, the session aimed to motivate the students to approach their upcoming examinations with a positive mindset and equip them with essential strategies for success.
During the session, reflections and experiences were shared by VUT students currently in their third year and serving in different organisations within the university.
Exam tips were also provided by the Student Support Services (SSS) team, including Social Worker Dr. Siphesihle Maseko and Miemie Taukobong, a VUT Psychometrist. In their presentation, the SSS duo highlighted the importance of managing anxiety and distinguishing between stress and anxiety, along with strategies to handle both effectively. They also gave the students tips on how to tackle questions as they appear on the question papers.
Expressing their appreciation for the session, Adelaide Tlou and Noluthando Mbeje, both pursuing Bachelors in Education said, “It was insightful. We have been motivated to do better and now know where to go for advice should we encounter challenges.”
“Failure has 7 letters, and so does success. Negativity has 10 letters, and so does positivity. You’ve got this. Seize the opportunity and embrace it. You’ve worked tirelessly for months. The road to academic excellence is never easy, but your resilience is a testament to the fact that you always have a choice. Focus,” concluded Mr Kgoakgele Mokgato, Safety Management student and mentor.
