Nine third-year Vaal University of Technology (VUT) fashion students were chosen to attend this year’s Vodacom Durban July to showcase their talent and be part of one of the year’s much-anticipated events.
Being chosen to part take in the event was an honour for them as they got to experience the real world as designers and the level of class in different venues. They had the opportunity to be exposed to other designers’ work and draw inspiration for future reference.
With the theme “It is Time” the designers explored different ideas and colours.
Miss M Ramalekana said she was inspired by a lady from her church who used to make her own clothes. That got her interested in the art of creating signature pieces from scratch.

Miss L Matebesi chose to explore timeless garments that can never go out of style and will be appropriate for any event, while Miss A Sikhosana envisioned going back in time to the 1930s and 50s eras or taking time/clock as inspiration.

Three of the fashion students were selected as part of the top 15 Exceptional Fascinator/Hat Race-day Fashion Competition and Miss P Nkuna took second place.
“Finding out that I would be going to the Durban July was overwhelming, but getting to meet other student designers was a great experience that I will never take for granted,” said Miss Z Ndlovu.
