The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Student Living and Learning, in partnership with IHAU, SANCA, SAPS/Community Safety, THUTHUSELA, VUT Chaplain, SCO and Student Counselling hosted orientation for all first-year students with a surprise special guest from Scandal, Mr Jerry Mofokeng Wa Makhetha. The event took place on Friday, 21 February 2020 at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall.
He and his group from Speakers Firm presented a play called #our first years are not for sale.
The purpose of the event was to welcome all first-year students and encourage them to stay focused and strive for the best when it comes to their academics.
The Director of Residence, Mr Kgotla Marumole emphasised the importance of safety for all students staying in VUT residences and advised them about which offices to consult when they need help in terms of safety and other issues that could hinder their academic excellence. Mr Marumole informed students that all residences have rules and regulations that need to be observed by students “Life is not given on a silver platter” he said.
Mr Khethelo Mazibuko, a motivational speaker, spoke of the five key things to consider in order to be successful in life: Perceiving knowledge; Analysing knowledge; Having knowledge; Learning to produce your own knowledge and Applying knowledge.
He encouraged students to apply the knowledge that they have acquired during their academic years of study effectively, and that it is important that they represent their institutions when they go into industries.
Mr Mofokeng concluded by saying: “Have the courage to do the right thing when nobody is watching, when your parents are not there, do what will add value and success to your life.”
