“If I can get an opportunity to go back – whether to further my studies, particular to do my Masters or work in Germany, I would not even have a second thought about it, I’d go for it,” These are the words of Mashudu Valentine Malatjie, a postgraduate student in Information Technology at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), as she recounts an extraordinary five-month academic journey at the Aalen University in Germany from the first week of October 2023 to 21 February 2024.
Mashudu, originally from Phalaborwa (Ga-Selwane), Limpopo, highlights how her time in Germany exceeded her expectations. “It was a wonderful experience as an ambassador for the dreams nurtured at VUT. This opportunity provided me with valuable insights into the transformative power of education and the importance of cultural exchange. I in turn, had the opportunity to inspire others, promote educational opportunities, and foster cross-cultural understanding, I am grateful to the VUT Internationalisation office for the opportunity and the faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences for making sure my stay at Germany was worthwhile” she adds.
She continued to say the experience has influenced her outlook on life and can also help her appreciate the significance of education.
Mashudu’s dedication and academic mastery have earned her a prestigious scholarship, following a successful interview and outstanding academic performance. The opportunity arose for the winter semester, presenting her with a student exchange program that would broaden her horizons. Joining her on this educational journey was one VUT student Disebo Pooe and three others from Central University of Technology (CUT) and two from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
Mashudu advises students aspiring to study abroad to cultivate resilience and adaptability, maintain financial stability, build genuine connections, prioritize self-care and growth, balance assertiveness with respect, all while remaining dedicated to their educational pursuits. “Embrace exploration and wanderlust, while honoring your commitment to education by attending classes diligently. With these principles, seize opportunities confidently, knowing each step brings you closer to your goals,” she concluded.
Vido Kungune, Acting Director of VUT’s Internationalisation Office, lauded Mashudu’s achievements as a testament to VUT’s commitment to global engagement and collaboration.
