South Africa is a water scarce country and therefore, requires a comprehensive water quality management system, which is crucial for amongst others, the environmental sustainability and public health.
To grow the body of knowledge in this complex discipline, extensive research is required – a call occasion that Olayinka Emmanuel Adisa, a recent Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Master of Applied Science in Chemistry graduate (Cum Laude), fearlessly responded to.
With a thesis titled: “Synthesis of magnetite polydopamine-methyl-β-cyclodextrin adsorbent for the adsorption of antibiotics from wastewater”, Adisa’s research is set to be a game changer and a great boost to the country’s water quality management efforts. By developing a cost-efficient and highly effective adsorbent for removing antibiotic pollutants from wastewater, Olayinka’s work promises to make a tangible impact on water quality management efforts.
A determined scholar hailing from the vibrant state of Osun in Nigeria’s Southwestern region, Adisa says he has always had a fervent passion for research and a commitment to academic excellence. During his tenure at VUT, Olayinka served as both a resolute tutor, immersing himself in the pursuit of knowledge and the exploration of innovative solutions to real-world challenges. All this came to fruition when he graduated on 15April 2024, marking a significant milestone in his academic career.
Reflecting on his achievement, he expresses profound gratitude for the guidance of his supervisor, Dr Agnes Pholosi, a VUT senior lecturer in the department of Natural Sciences, the university support, and the invaluable experience gained through tutoring at the Mathematics, Science, Engineering, and Technology (MSET) centre. He attributes his success to God’s grace and sees this accomplishment as a steppingstone to even greater endeavours.
Looking ahead, with his sights set on pursuing a Ph.D. and continuing his personal and professional development, Adisa remains steadfast in his commitment to lifelong learning and growth. He emphasizes the importance of balance and effective time management in achieving one’s goals.
To aspiring students and colleagues seeking to further their studies, he offers sage advice: “prioritize God, seek out innovative knowledge, and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.”
His motto, “River never goes reverse,” serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of resilience and forward momentum in the face of challenges.
