On Tuesday, 2 April, the Gift of the Givers Foundation donated food packs to the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) after the University requested assistance to tackle food shortages among students.
The donation is aimed at assisting 150 BEd students who are not funded by NSFAS and need additional help: “The funding agency that has promised them funding for food, will only make that available later in the year. This donation was brought in to help tide them through while they await their funding,” said Dr Narissa Ramdhani, Director: Resource Mobilisation at VUT.
The project was led by Mr Jan Jooste the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Commercialisation who requested assistance from Dr Narissa’s office. “As a resource mobiliser, it is my mandate to build relationships with funders who could be of benefit to the University. This is part of that process,” she said, adding that this was an opportunity to strengthen relations with the well-known foundation.
Dr Narissa said that by directly addressing the issue of student hunger, at least one burden is alleviated from needy students who face multiple challenges at universities all over the country.
