Students pledging to Protect themselves

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted a condom promotion on the 11th October in association with Durex, a leading condom brand, and the charity Red which aims at reducing HIV/AIDS in South Africa and Africa.
“Durex and Red aim to reach 150 000 people in and around Gauteng to get them to pledge to having safe sex,” said Bronwyn, the event organiser for Durex. She also mentioned that Durex and Red go to a lot of universities in Gauteng as well as major clinics, hospitals and malls to encourage responsible behaviour.
After taking the pledge each student received a condom and a bracelet meant to remind people to practice safe sex.
The event organiser thanked the VUT for having them at their premises and said they were happy with the turnout.
Students said that it felt good to pledge to have safe sex, as they want to stay protected from HIV/AIDS.
The Institutional HIV/AIDS Unit (IHAU), which hosted their biannual Health and Wellness Campaign from 08th– 11th October 2018, joined Durex and Red on the last day.
The wellness campaign incorporated HIV testing and Biometrics monitoring.
The coordinators of IHAU said that the event was a success as more students and staff volunteered this year. The overall aim of the campaign is to eliminate the stigma and victimisation associated with the disease.
