Research, along with teaching and learning, and community engagement, form the strategic pillars of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). In addition to advancing new knowledge, research plays a fundamental role in solving problems faced by society – something which is at the core of the University’s socially engaged scholarship initiative. The initiative sought to embed the scholarship of engagement through which relations amongst scholars, academics and communities are fostered through reciprocal and mutual learning for the benefit of social humanity.
Recently, VUT’s Research Department took a significant step in the realisation of this objective, by hosting a virtual Research Indaba which brought together researchers and supporters of research from all four faculties and the support departments, to discuss topics of common interest.
The primary goal of the Indaba was to provide a comprehensive overview of the VUT research context, shedding light on the opportunities and challenges faced by researchers. It also aimed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of research endeavours while proposing potential strategies and solutions to enhance VUT’s research impact and performance. This analysis and contextualization of VUT’s research activities aim to improve the university’s overall research output and effectiveness.
One of the speakers at the event was the acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Dan Mokoena who welcomed the attendees and opened the Indaba. In his address, Dr Mokoena emphasized that research is at the core of VUT’s academic activities and aligns with the strategic objectives of the University. He also stressed the importance of taking care of scholars as this contributes significantly to the institution’s reputation and standing in academic rankings. “The 2023 strategic plan includes the establishment of a research unit, as outlined in the VC’s Quarterly Report released on July 14, 2023,” said Dr Mokoena, adding that the university has a responsibility to ensure that its researchers are well supported and nurtured.
Furthermore, the research department shared insights into the positive impact of research funding from external stakeholders. This financial support contributes to the production of scholarly articles, books, and journals. Encouraging researchers to continue producing high-quality publications helps bolster VUT’s presence in the market and fosters collaboration between supervisors and Master’s and PhD students in writing research articles.
Overall, this Research Indaba marked a significant milestone in VUT’s journey to enhance its research endeavours. By acknowledging and addressing challenges, and with the support of all stakeholders involved, the university is well on its way to achieving even greater research excellence and making a lasting impact in academia and beyond.
