On Friday, 17 May, the Information Technology (IT) department hosted a symposium for the IT students at the Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) Vanderbijlpark campus.
The department invited four guest speakers from Vodacom, a South African mobile communications company, to address and interact with the students so as to give them a better idea of what the corporate world is like and what opportunites are out there for graduates.
The day was underlined by the notion: “have a teachable spirit”. The guests gave insight on the work that they do and what their duties entail. They also elaborated on the different programmes the company offers to students such as: graduate opportunities, internships and holiday programmes. They provided tips and advice on going for interviews in a workplace.
The speakers encouraged the students to strive to be the best in everything that they do: “The world should be your oyster, work harder and smarter. Wherever you are, there is always an opportunity for you to better yourself,” they said.
The department and the students are looking forward to hosting and attending many more of these summits. The students said they were left feeling inspired and empowered.
