On 24 May 2024, the Department of Civil Engineering at the Vaal University of Technology hosted a ‘Work Prep Workshop’ to empower students with job readiness tips. The event was organized by the Building and Construction Student Society Organisation (BCESSO), which plays a vital role in representing students at the Civil Engineering department – the structure recognized by the South African Institute of Civil Engineering (SAICE).
The main objectives of the workshop were to comprehensively prepare students for their future careers in civil engineering by focusing on skills development, practical experience, industry awareness, and ethical and professional standards.
Featuring detailed presentations and discussions led by experienced civil engineers and professionals, the one-day workshop focused on three key areas in the civil engineering industry: Smart Infrastructure, Automation and Robotics, as well as 3D Printing.
Mr. Oliver Rowe, a representative from SAICE emphasized that such sessions aimed to educate students about the importance of professional development in the field of civil engineering. The discussions covered current industry trends, challenges, and opportunities, helping students understand the real-world applications of their academic knowledge.
BCESSO collaborated closely with industry professionals and referenced established standards and guidelines from recognized bodies and other relevant professional organizations to ensure that the workshop content aligned with current industry standards and practices.
Another key feature of the day was a presentation on financial literacy conducted by ABSA which focused on managing finances as a young professional. Mr. Edwin Mabelane from Co-Operative Education Department delivered a comprehensive presentation on Work Integrated Learning (WIL), providing in-depth insights into the program and its advantages.
Post-workshop, BCESSO plans to follow up with participants to support their ongoing professional development in civil engineering through networking opportunities, mentorship programs, continuous learning resources, and professional development workshops.
