Institutional Academic Seminar unlocks pathways to excellence for students at VUT

The Student Representative Council (SRC) of Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has reignited the flames of academic excellence among the student populace. This, following the successful hosting of a highly dynamism Institutional Academic Seminar which was an outpour of a wealth of knowledge and opportunities designed to support and enhance student educational journey at VUT
The two-day seminar was supported by Student Life and Governance and Student Support Services and significantly bolstered by the presence and contributions of some of the university’s management officials, including faculty executive deans, directors and heads of various departments.
Primarily, this seminar was mapped out to provide students with essential tools and insights for academic success.
The first day focused on the Faculties of Applied and Computer Science and Engineering and Technology while the second day covered the Faculties of Human Sciences and Management Sciences.
During faculty-based sessions, executive deans elaborated on key academic aspects, including progress rules, prerequisites and non-prerequisites, major modules, work-integrated learning, academic exclusion, and the academic appeal process. They also discussed the role of the faculty board. Also, for students to engage with thought leaders, explore innovative strategies, and connect with a community dedicated to their educational advancement.
The seminar provided students with crucial information into the significance of SSS and the roles of Student Life and Governance.
Notably, the seminar also covered essential exam-related topics such as exam sub-minimum requirements, exam rules, special exams, and senate procedures. Additionally, the Centre for Academic Development (CAD) Academic Advisors introduced their range of services and how they can be accessed, while Student Counselling highlighted the importance of stress management, timely studying, and seeking assistance when struggling with academics. To wrap up, the Information Librarian shared valuable study tips and guidance on accessing textbooks and other essential study materials.
The Academic Officer of the SRC, Mr. Monde Mhlakaza, remarked “I hope you will make the most of the valuable information you have gathered in this seminar. Remember, investing in your own future is one of the most important decisions you can make. Apply what you have learned, take proactive steps towards your goals, and continue to build on this foundation.”
