The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently welcomed the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA) for a consultation with its bursary beneficiaries at the University.
Currently, INSETA funds close to fifty (50) students pursuing Advanced Diplomas and Diplomas in Cost & Management Accounting and Internal Auditing at VUT. The bursary project, which covers tuition fees, accommodation/transport and book allowances, was implemented at VUT in March 2008, following much talks between the two entities.
The visit, a well-coordinated effort by the university’s Department of Accountancy was aimed at providing students who are funded by INSETA with the valuable opportunity to engage directly with their funders, fostering a sense of support and accountability. For INSETA, the visit was part of its monitoring and evaluation of their beneficiaries, as well commitment to supporting them. For VUT on the other hand, the visit was an extension on ongoing efforts by the university to bridge the gap between the funding organisations and the beneficiaries. Additionally, the midmorning visit highlighted the importance of maintaining transparent and open communication channels between the students and their financial sponsors.
The engagement commenced with a warm welcome from Dr Johannes Maseko, the Head of Accountancy Department and currently acting as the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences.
During the visit, students had the chance to discuss their academic progress, challenges, and future aspirations with Ms Thembi Mahlangu, Learning Specialist from INSETA. This face-to-face interaction allowed for a deeper understanding of the students’ needs and how INSETA can further support them in their educational journey. It also provided a platform for students to express their gratitude and to learn more about the expectations and opportunities provided by INSETA.
The consultation was not only about assessing academic performance but also about ensuring that students feel seen and heard by their funders. It highlighted the holistic approach that INSETA takes in supporting students, considering not just their financial needs but their overall well-being and success.
The collaboration between VUT’s Department of Accountancy and INSETA is evidence of the commitment both institutions have towards the students’ academic and professional growth. By fostering such engagements, they are ensuring that the students are well-prepared to meet their educational goals and are equipped with the necessary tools to excel in their future careers.
The INSETA visit to VUT was a successful initiative that strengthened the relationship between students and their funders. It showcased the importance of continuous support and open dialogue in achieving educational success. This visit not only reassured the students of their support system but also demonstrated INSETA’s dedication to their long-term success.
