Vaal University of Technology’s Student Support Services made a call to action for all men in VUT to come together and discuss their daily battles. Matters related to social, spiritual, financial, educational, and health were discussed at the gathering held at the VUT Lapa Lounge on 23 June.
Institutional HIV/AIDS Unit (IHAU), the mother body of Student Support Services, organised “Men’s Battle Dialogue” with the aims of forming a brotherhood and forum for men to discuss their issues and seek help when they have problems. Representatives from SANCA, Anglo American, Clientele, 5 PM (5 P’s of manhood) organisation, First Thing First, and Anova Health Institution, formed part of the stakeholders who presented on the day. There were HIV/AIDS testing stations and circumcision doctors to educate men about health matters.
SANCA’s presentation was titled: Men and substance abuse, which was a relatable topic for most of the men in attendance. Anglo American emphasised on issues around health. They said that there are career opportunities for skilled youth within their organisation however, their struggle is finding individuals who are fit for certain jobs because of health matters.
Student Counsellor and Assistant Director at Sedibeng College, Mr Jabu Mbongo, enlightened the fellows about anthropology and gave advice on how to be positive and impactful leaders as young men. The men were reminded to recreate themselves and believe in themselves.
This informal dialogue was directed by vibrant entertainer and radio presenter, Happy K from Thetha FM. The event was closed off with a braai and networking session.
