Navigating the appointment of foreign nationals at VUT: A comprehensive workshop

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT)’s Department of Social and Transformation (SJT) has taken a proactive step by spearheading and hosting a workshop centred around the appointment of foreign nationals. A first for VUT, the workshop was held on 9 February 2024.
Held against the background of the development of an institutional policy on appointment of foreign nationals, the workshop reflects the university’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that its international staff members are not only well-informed about their rights but are also equipped with the requisite documentation to navigate the complex landscape of legal residence and employment within the country.
This noteworthy event gained significant attention and active participation, attracting government officials such as Mr. Makhalemele Mohojane, Deputy Director, Department of Home Affairs and Mr. Lucky Tsoari, Assistant Director, Department of Employment and Labour. Their significant presence stressed the importance of the workshop, signifying a collective dedication to addressing pertinent issues surrounding the engagement of foreign nationals.
The government officials brought their wealth of knowledge to the forefront, delivering insightful presentations that explained various aspects of their respective domains. The Department of Home Affair’s ‘s presentation, emphasized the pivotal role played by different visa categories, explaining their significance and proper utilization. Meanwhile, Mr. Lucky Tsoari, representing the Department of Employment and Labour, reached into the critical aspects of labour migration. He underscored the imperative of promoting equality within the workplace, emphasizing the need for fair and just employment practices.
This workshop not only provided a platform for valuable information exchange but also fostered a deeper understanding of the legal and procedural aspects governing the engagement of foreign nationals. The collaborative effort between the university and government representatives is indicative of their joint commitment to promoting inclusivity and adherence to government’s regulatory and legislative frameworks. This dedication ensures the cultivation of a harmonious and equitable work environment for all, marking a significant stride toward fostering a globalized and diverse academic community.
In addition to these efforts, the University has an International Office is aimed at promoting and facilitating all facets of internationalisation and the development of the University in all spheres.
