The event provided an invaluable platform for faculty members to deepen their understanding of research methodologies, particularly focusing on qualitative and mixed methods of research approaches, while also celebrating the remarkable achievements of its staff.

The retreat, facilitated by Professor Connie Moloi, Dean at Madina Institute SA, alongside Dr Anthony Isabirye, Lecturer, aimed to equip participants with practical insights into advanced research methodologies. The mixed methods approach was highlighted as a powerful tool for capturing the depth and complexity of academic phenomena, drawing from sources such as student reviews, evaluations, and everyday interactions within the academic environment.

Dr Tara Walmsley, Senior Lecturer in Biotechnology, emphasised the significance of the event as a reflection of the faculty’s commitment to excellence. “Today, we gather to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our talented faculty staff. This event is a testament to the dedication, perseverance, innovation, and excellence that define our faculty. It also provides a unique opportunity to expand our understanding of research methods and celebrate what we have collectively accomplished,” she said.

The programme was divided into two segments. The first session, led by Professor Moloi, focused on the application of qualitative and mixed methods research approaches. Participants were guided on how to leverage these methodologies to uncover meaningful narratives from data, ultimately enhancing teaching and learning. Through practical examples, Professor Moloi demonstrated how to transform everyday data into actionable insights, showcasing the potential of mixed methods to enrich academic research.

The second session celebrated the outstanding contributions of faculty researchers through the staff research recognition awards for 2024. This segment showcased the importance of acknowledging and inspiring research excellence within the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences.

In closing, Professor Cornelius Ssemakalu, the Faculty Research Manager and Senior Lecturer, encouraged attendees to engage in research activities, highlighting their critical role in advancing the university’s mission. Similarly, Professor Solly Lebelo, Associate Professor, reiterated the importance of fostering a research culture and urged participants to embrace innovation and collaboration in their scholarly pursuits.

The event not only celebrated achievements but also served as a catalyst for fostering a culture of research, innovation, and academic excellence within the faculty.

“VUT’s FACS hosts a research retreat and awards ceremony, promoting excellence through training on qualitative methods and celebrating staff achievements.” […]

[47

post-16065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology
["GET
