This year’s programme was nothing short of spectacular, not only introducing students to their new academic environment but also marking a significant milestone with record-breaking enrolment numbers. Excitement filled the campus as first-year students eagerly participated in various activities designed to familiarise them with university life and set the tone for a successful academic journey.

This year’s orientation attracted an unprecedented number of students across all faculties. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology led the way with 1,405 students, followed by the Faculty of Management Sciences with 1,273 students. The Faculty of Human Sciences welcomed 1,224 students, while the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences hosted 554 students. The large turnout reflected VUT’s growing appeal as an institution of choice, attracting ambitious students eager to embark on their academic pursuits.

The orientation was carefully structured, with each faculty assigned a specific day to ensure that students received tailored information relevant to their respective fields of study. This approach allowed students to gain insights from faculty representatives, the School Representative Council, and various essential campus services, including the Campus Clinic and Protection Services. These informative sessions provided a thorough understanding of the resources available, equipping students with the knowledge to navigate their university experience effectively.

In addition to the educational sessions, students were taken on a campus tour, exploring key locations such as lecture halls, libraries, and recreational areas. The tour was a crucial part of the orientation, helping students feel more at ease in their new environment and fostering a sense of belonging within the VUT community.

Following the first week of orientation, the programme continued with an Academic Transition Workshop and Digital Literacy Training from 10 to 14 February. This second phase focused on preparing students for the academic challenges ahead while providing them with vital digital skills necessary for success in an increasingly technology-driven world. The workshop was an essential step in the transition from high school to university, ensuring that students were ready to engage with both the academic and digital demands of higher education.

The orientation culminated in a grand finale on 27 February with a highly anticipated Welcoming Party at the main residence sports grounds. The evening began with a warm welcome from Dr Sibusiso Mchunu, the Executive Director of Student Support Services, who highlighted the importance of student well-being and academic success. His encouraging words set the stage for an exciting celebration. The event also featured presentations from representatives of key units of student support services, including the Campus Clinic, IHAU, Student Accommodation and Catering and Sports and Recreation who provided important information regarding student support, health, wellness, and safety on campus. Setting the tone was the Student Representative Council who welcomed students and provided information on student governance and representation at VUT.

The celebratory mood was heightened by the presence of several prominent sponsors, whose support made the event even more memorable. Students were treated to electrifying performances by popular artists 016 BangerBanger Boys and Young Stunna, keeping the energy high throughout the evening and ensuring that the Welcoming Party would be remembered as a highlight of the orientation.

As the orientation drew to a close, it was clear that VUT had successfully prepared its first-year students for the exciting journey ahead. The orientation programme, with its combination of informative sessions, campus tours, and unforgettable celebrations, ensured that students were not only well-prepared for the academic challenges of university life but also felt a strong sense of community and support that will carry them through their years at VUT.
