The newly elected board, led by Mr Jacob Thamaga, is poised to elevate the station’s influence and ensure its continued relevance in a rapidly evolving media landscape.

Mr Jacob Thamaga, the newly appointed Chairperson of the Board and Manager of the African Languages Development Unit (VUT) expressed his deep belief in the power of community radio to inform, empower, and connect people. His motivation for this leadership role stems from his passion for supporting the station’s growth and its ability to impact students, staff, and the wider community.

“My key priorities will be to strengthen the station’s community ties, enhance the quality and diversity of our programming, and ensure that we are financially sustainable,” said Mr Thamaga. “We also aim to modernise our technology infrastructure and foster a culture of creativity and innovation within the team while ensuring compliance with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) regulations.”

To bolster listenership and community engagement, the board plans to implement a strategic plan that amplifies local voices, interests, and aspirations. “We have a highly experienced Chair of Programmes, and together with the other board members and station management, we will create content that resonates with the community,” added Mr Thamaga. “We also envision hosting more interactive events, live shows, and outreach programmes to strengthen our connection with our audience.”

The newly appointed Chairperson of Programmes, Mr Kwetepe Matlakala, a Language Practitioner at the Centre for Academic Development, brings a wealth of experience to the team. His passion for radio began at a young age, inspired by legendary broadcasters on Thobela FM. “Radio is my future,” said Mr Matlakala. “One of the reasons I took this offer is that I believe my skills and experience will add value to the station. I want to inspire and motivate the team while ensuring that VUT FM remains relevant and competitive.”

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, including financial sustainability and competition from digital platforms, Mr Thamaga outlined strategies to diversify revenue streams. These include sponsorships, grants, fundraising events, and digital monetisation through streaming platforms. “We will also conduct audience research to align our programming with listener needs,” he emphasised.

Technology will play a pivotal role in VUT FM’s evolution. The board aims to embrace digital platforms for streaming and podcasting, enhancing listener engagement through social media and mobile apps. Investments in modern broadcasting equipment and training will improve content quality and operational efficiency.

Diversity and inclusivity will remain at the heart of VUT FM’s programming. “We want to ensure that our content reflects the full spectrum of our community,” said Mr Thamaga. “Our team, presenters, and guests will represent diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds, ensuring broad audience appeal.”

New board members and their roles

The newly elected board consists of seasoned professionals dedicated to driving VUT FM forward:

Chairperson of the Board – Mr Jacob Thamaga (Manager: African Languages Development Unit)

Deputy Chairperson – Ms Louisa Japtha (Lecturer: Legal Department)

Treasurer – Ms Sibongile Mokaeane (Lecturer: Public Relations)

Chairperson of Programmes – Mr Kwetepe Matlakala (Language Practitioner: Centre for Academic Development)

Mr Teboho Bojabotseha – Acting Manager: Social Justice and Transformation; Lecturer: Tourism and Integrated Learning

Mr Judas Mabilu – HR Business Partner

Ms Nkuly Khumalo – Lecturer: Visual Arts and Design

Ms Louisa Japtha – Lecturer: Legal Department

As the new leadership embarks on this journey, their collective vision is to leave behind a financially self-sustaining station deeply embedded in the community. “We want to ensure that VUT FM is not just a leader in local radio but also a model for how community radio can adapt to changing media landscapes,” concluded Thamaga.

With a dynamic team in place, VUT FM is set to reach new heights, ensuring that it remains an integral part of the university and the broader community for years to come.

“New leadership, fresh vision!
