In a celebration of artistic innovation and student leadership, third-year Fine Art students from the Faculty of Human Sciences at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) unveiled their much-anticipated exhibition on 9 May 2025. Titled \u201cI Am Not an Artist, I Am What Is\u201d<\/em>, the showcase opened to wide acclaim at the university\u2019s Bodutu Art Gallery in K-Block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thought-provoking theme challenges conventional perceptions of artistic identity, inviting viewers to reconsider the boundaries between creator and creation. Through a diverse range of media, including painting, sculpture, digital installations, and mixed media works, the students presented compelling personal narratives that resonated across the VUT community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than a demonstration of artistic talent, the exhibition reflected the students\u2019 ability to conceptualise, plan, and deliver a professional-level event. The theme encouraged authentic expression, urging participants to move beyond traditional labels and embrace their individual creative identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visitors to the Bodutu Art Gallery were treated to a carefully curated collection of works that showcased the finest student art produced in 2024. Each piece offered a unique perspective, incorporating elements of South African cultural heritage, contemporary social issues, and stories of personal transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the artwork itself, the exhibition served as a valuable experiential learning platform. The students were responsible for managing every aspect of the event. The organising committee was divided into specialised teams: the curatorial team curated the artworks to ensure a cohesive experience; technical specialists managed lighting and sound; the finance team oversaw budgeting and resource allocation; media coordinators promoted the exhibition across multiple channels; and ushers welcomed and assisted guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlanning this exhibition taught us invaluable skills that extend far beyond the classroom. We\u2019ve gained practical experience that will benefit our future careers in the arts sector,\u201d said Ms Lethabo Mashego, Head Curator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combining artistic excellence with real-world experience, \u201cI Am Not an Artist, I Am What Is\u201d<\/em> exemplifies VUT\u2019s commitment to holistic education that prepares students for the demands of the creative industries.
