The evening was dedicated to honouring educators whose dedication, innovation, and leadership are shaping the future of teaching and learning at VUT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event opened with a warm welcome by Dr Muntuwenkhosi Chili, Executive Director of the Centre for Academic Development, who reminded guests that the awards were not just a celebration of individual achievement, but a reaffirmation of VUT\u2019s collective commitment to excellence. Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Khehla Ndlovu, delivered an inspiring message of gratitude to keynote speakers, distinguished guests, conference partners, and sponsors. He emphasised that the purpose of the evening was to celebrate those who go beyond the call of duty, shaping society through teaching excellence and educational innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe achievements we recognise tonight remind us that education is not simply the transfer of knowledge, it is a force that changes lives and strengthens society locally and globally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The special guest speaker was Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, a former politician who is now a radio host. In his keynote address, he reflected on the power of education and the role of technology in reshaping learning. Dr Ndlozi emphasised the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in education, calling on educators to harness it responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI firmly believe that artificial intelligence holds the key to unlocking new opportunities in education, making learning more accessible, personalised, and empowering for all. It is our responsibility to ensure knowledge knows no boundaries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guests were entertained by the soulful harmonies of Hem, a musical group from Sharpeville, before the evening\u2019s highlight: the Academic Technology Integration Awards. These awards recognised educators who are pioneering the integration of technology into<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>teaching and learning, advancing VUT\u2019s mission of producing graduates ready for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Guests were treated to the soulful harmonies of Hem, a musical group from Sharpeville, before the evening&#8217;s main event: the Recognition Awards for Teaching Excellence (RATE Awards). Dr Johannes Dirane, the Staff Development Manager at the Centre for Academic Development, announced these awards to honour educators who are at the forefront of integrating technology into teaching and learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognition Awards Winners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Mr Quinti Senekal (Department of Tourism and Integrated Communication), recognised for innovative curriculum redesign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Dr Patience Mapule Thabede (Department of Chemistry), celebrated for her commitment to student-centred teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Ms Thembekile Rafube (Department of Accountancy), honoured for her use of digital tools to enhance student engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merit Award Winners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Dr Kgomotso Mtshatsheni (Department of Chemistry)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Dr Ronel Cassim (Department of Accountancy)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Dr Sumari Tesnear (Department of Marketing, Retail Business and Sport Management)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Ms Bhekiwe Nontokozo Simelane (Department of Marketing, Retail Business and Sport Management)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Ms Julia Mofokeng (Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Public Relations Management)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highest Recognition Award Winners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Dr Tanya Erasmus (Department of Tourism and Integrated Communication)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Mr Nhlanhla Nyembe (Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Prof Thokozani Xaba (Department of Natural Sciences)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital Teaching Innovation Awards<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Mr Patrick Nemalili<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Dr Yolande van Zyl<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Ms Dosette van der Walt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Mr Meshack Mazibuko<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Ms Tisetso Mohloai<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winners received monetary awards ranging from R5,000 to R40,000 in recognition of their professional achievements and contributions to advancing higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While receiving her award, Dr Thabede remarked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis recognition motivates us to keep pushing boundaries, to embrace new methods, and to never lose sight of the students at the heart of our work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Mandisa Cakwe, Director of University Capacity Development at the Department of Higher Education and Training, emphasised the importance of stronger industry engagement and reminded educators that peace in society begins with teachers who understand their students deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Mukondeleli Kanakana-Katumba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve. Reflecting on her personal journey, she urged educators to continue striving for innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Lazarus Mohapi Maleho, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences, and Mr Luxolo Rubushe, Group Managing Director of Adapt IT Technology, brought the evening to a memorable close.
