More than a ceremonial milestone, the moment marks the restoration of momentum on a long-delayed development and reflects the University’s renewed commitment to delivering on its academic mandate.

The ceremony, attended by University leadership, Council members, students, and key stakeholders, marked the transition of the project into its next phase. The refurbishment stands not merely as a completed structure in progress, but as a statement of intent, one that speaks to resilience, accountability, and a future firmly anchored in academic excellence.

Programme Director, Dr Grace Kanakana-Katumba, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, framed the occasion as both a moment of reflection and renewed purpose. “This milestone speaks to the power of vision, perseverance, and collective effort. Through initiatives of this nature, we are able to create lasting impact and ensure that the University continues to serve future generations with purpose and distinction,” she reflected.

Delivering the welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Khehla Ndlovu, underscored the symbolic weight of the project. He described the building as “a restoration of momentum and purpose,” noting that for more than a decade the structure had stood as an “incomplete promise.” He added that the occasion goes beyond infrastructure, reaffirming the University’s commitment to academic excellence and to equipping students with the tools required to succeed in an increasingly competitive global environment.

Originally conceived in 2015, the Life Sciences Building was intended to address critical infrastructure gaps within the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences. Once completed, the facility will house advanced laboratories, technical spaces, and modern teaching environments supporting disciplines including microbiology, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, environmental sciences, and agriculture.

Providing context on the project’s journey, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Resources and Operations, Mr Scelo Mahlalela, pointed to the complexity of its revival. Following years of delays, the project was repositioned through a structured recovery process initiated in 2024, which included the allocation of institutional funding, a revised implementation plan, and the appointment of a new contractor in late 2025. Mr Mahlalela described the handover as a decisive turning point, signalling the University’s determination to confront past challenges and deliver infrastructure essential for both student success and institutional growth.

Highlighting the academic impact, Acting Executive Dean of the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences, Dr Nolutho Mkhumbeni, emphasised the importance of the facility in strengthening practical learning. She noted that limitations in laboratory infrastructure had historically constrained hands-on training in science-based disciplines. Dr Mkhumbeni indicated that the upgraded facility will unlock meaningful, industry-aligned learning experiences, strengthening graduate readiness while advancing innovation in areas such as biotechnology, environmental sustainability, and alternative energy.

The development aligns closely with VUT’s Strategy 2033+, which prioritises an enhanced student experience, research excellence, and the provision of enabling infrastructure.

Offering a student perspective, Student Representative Council President, Mr Nkosinathi Nkosi, welcomed the progress while urging sustained accountability. He emphasised the need for consistent delivery, noting that all stakeholders must remain committed to ensuring the project reaches completion without further setbacks.

VUT Chancellor, Mr Zwelibanzi Mntambo, reinforced the notion of shared responsibility, reminding the University community that the building represents more than physical infrastructure. He noted that it stands as a collective asset, one that must be protected and sustained to ensure it continues to support excellence in teaching, learning, and innovation for generations to come.

In his closing remarks, Council Chairperson, Professor Mandla Radebe, highlighted the broader significance of the development. He observed that achievements of this nature reflect the strength of collaboration, leadership, and a shared institutional vision, reinforcing the University’s commitment to delivering on its promise to students and society.

As VUT advances on its journey towards its 60th anniversary, the handover of the Life Sciences Building stands as a powerful marker of renewal. It is not only the revival of a project once delayed, but the reassertion of institutional purpose, positioning the University as a catalyst for innovation, transformation, and socio-economic progress.

The University community now looks ahead to the full completion of the facility, when its doors will open in service of education, research, and the advancement of society.

“VUT officially hands over the Life Sciences Building refurbishment project, marking a major step in advancing research, innovation, and student […]

[47

post-34703","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology
["GET
