When asked to sum up her entire varsity experience in a single word, she didn’t hesitate. “Adventure,” she said, a word that carried the weight of sleepless nights, emotional battles, and moments of triumph.

Graduating with a Master of Applied Sciences in Biotechnology, Ms Xaba’s academic work focused on microbial degradation and detoxification of aflatoxin B1 and M1, a critical area of research aimed at improving food safety and protecting public health. Her work stands as a meaningful contribution to the fight against harmful toxins that affect communities worldwide.

Behind her success lies a strong support system that carried her through her most difficult moments. The first person she planned to call after her achievement was her younger sister. “She’s like my life partner, my support structure,” she shared, her voice filled with gratitude. Alongside her sister is her best friend, someone she describes as equally essential in her journey, someone she would call immediately to share the life-changing news.

But the road to this milestone was far from smooth. “It’s been a challenging road, honestly,” she admitted. There wasn’t just one breaking point; there were many. Moments of feeling stuck, unable to move forward, especially amid the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Times when giving up felt like the easier option.

Yet, in those moments of darkness, her family and friends became her light.

“They remind me that it’s okay if it takes time, as long as you get there,” she said. Their encouragement, rooted in faith and patience, helped her push forward even when she felt she had nothing left to give. “As long as you know you are doing your best, then leave the rest to the Lord,” she added, a statement that reveals the deep faith that anchored her through it all.

Her journey is not just one of academic success, but of emotional endurance, of learning to rise again after every setback, and to keep believing even when progress seemed invisible.

Now standing on the other side of her journey, Ms Xaba has a message for first-year students who are just beginning their own paths. Her advice is both gentle and powerful: “Do not rush into education. Prioritise yourself. Know what you want, figure out what works for you and what makes you happy, then take it from there.”

It is advice shaped by experience, struggle, growth, and self-discovery.

As she steps into the next chapter of her life, Ms Thembela Xaba Octavia carries more than just a qualification. She carries a story of resilience, love, and faith, a story that will inspire many who dare to dream beyond their circumstances.

From “Adventure” to achievement, her journey is a reminder that success is not always a straight path, but with the right support, belief, and perseverance, the destination is always worth it.

“Ms Thembela Xaba Octavia earns her master’s in biotechnology from VUT, sharing an emotional journey of resilience, faith, and academic […]

[47,1

post-35347","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology","category-uncategorized
["GET
