It was the fulfilment of a promise, carried quietly through years of study, sacrifice, and reflection.

On 22 April 2026, during the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Autumn Graduation Ceremony, held as part of the institution’s 60th anniversary, she was named among the top achievers in the Faculty of Management Sciences. She graduated cum laude with an Advanced Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting, a result that speaks not only to her academic strength, but to the journey behind it.

Raised in Embalenhle in Secunda, Mpumalanga, Ms Mahamotsa did not arrive at her field by chance. While her initial interest leaned towards auditing, she found herself drawn to the rhythm and discipline of Cost and Management Accounting. It was a space where logic meets persistence, where numbers tell stories, and where problems invite solutions.

“I love numbers and solving problems,” she said, a simple statement that reveals the foundation of her approach.

But beneath the discipline was something deeper. Her journey was shaped by loss, and by words that refused to fade.

“The last words that my father told me before he passed away were ‘focus on school,’” she said. “Everything I have achieved is for him.”

Those words became her anchor. In moments when the pressure mounted and doubt crept in, they pulled her back to purpose. They reminded her why she had started.

Her final year demanded more than academic commitment. Alongside her studies, she worked as a Supplemental Instruction Leader, guiding fellow students through the complexities of accounting. It meant long days, divided focus, and the constant balancing of responsibility.

“It was difficult. It was not easy,” she admitted.

One of her greatest challenges was the very subject she had chosen to master. Cost and Management Accounting tested her consistency and patience. Yet instead of retreating, she leaned into the discomfort.

“The way I overcame it was to practise every day,” she said.

It was this quiet discipline, repeated daily, that turned difficulty into strength. When concepts felt unclear, she stayed with them until they made sense. She refused to settle for surface understanding, choosing instead to build depth, piece by piece.

There were moments when the weight of it all felt overwhelming. But even then, she did not lose sight of where she was going. Her family, her purpose, and her promise kept her steady.

Now, as she steps beyond this milestone, her journey continues. She is currently pursuing a postgraduate qualification in Cost and Management Accounting while working as a trainee accountant, steadily shaping the future she once imagined.

As VUT marks 60 years of shaping lives and futures, Ms Mahamotsa’s story stands as a reminder that success is rarely sudden. It is built in quiet moments, in discipline no one sees, and in the courage to keep going when the path is not easy.

Her achievement is not only about graduating with distinction. It is about honouring a promise, discovering resilience, and proving that even in the face of loss, purpose can still lead the way.

“Matshidiso Mahamotsa graduates cum laude in Cost and Management Accounting at VUT, driven by purpose, resilience, and a promise that […]

[47,1

post-35793","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology","category-uncategorized
["GET
