A pause that carries years of sacrifice, long nights, difficult choices, and the stubborn belief that it will all come together.

For Ms Mia Mabena, that moment arrived on 24 April 2026 at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), where she crossed the stage as a cum laude graduate and top achiever in the Postgraduate Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. It was not just an academic milestone. It was the culmination of a journey shaped by discipline, mentorship, and an unrelenting sense of purpose.

Originally from Middelburg in Mpumalanga, Ms Mabena did not simply choose a qualification. She chose an environment that would challenge and refine her. At VUT, within the Department of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, she found more than lectures and assessments. She found a system that saw her potential and insisted on excellence.

Her story is not one of sudden brilliance. It is one of consistency. Of showing up. Of doing the work even when the outcome was uncertain.

“The guidance of the lecturers made the difference,” said Ms Mabena, who now works as a sea imports controller in Johannesburg. “They are not just lecturers, but mentors. They assist you, they guide you, they become a support system when the pressure builds.”

Behind the academic achievement lies another reality. Ms Mabena was not studying in isolation. She was balancing the demands of a professional career with the expectations of postgraduate study. The margins for error were thin. Time had to be negotiated. Energy had to be managed.

She credits her foundation to a strict upbringing and the discipline instilled long before she entered a lecture hall. An early internship at Samancor Chrome further sharpened her understanding of industry, grounding theory in lived experience.

“I was taught early that nothing comes easy,” she reflects. “That mindset stayed with me.”

As VUT marks 60 years of existence, stories like that of Ms Mabena give meaning to the milestone. They move the narrative beyond numbers and ceremonies into lived impact. They show what it means for an institution to shape not just graduates, but professionals who are ready to enter, influence, and lead within their industries.

Now pursuing her master’s degree at VUT, Ms Mabena is not slowing down. If anything, her journey is entering a new phase, one defined by deeper inquiry and greater responsibility.

Her message to current students is direct, almost urgent.

“We need to move away from just passing,” she said. “You cannot build a career on cramming. You need to understand what you are learning because you are going into the real world. When you understand, you can apply. And when you can apply, you become valuable.”

There is something fitting about this story unfolding during VUT’s 60th anniversary. It is a reminder that the legacy of a university is not found in buildings or timelines. It is found in people. In individuals who arrive uncertain and leave transformed.

On that April morning, when her name was called, it was more than recognition. It was confirmation. That the work mattered. That the journey held. And that the future, however demanding, is hers to shape.

“From Middelburg to distinction, Ms Mia Mabena earned cum laude honours at VUT, reflecting the university’s 60-year legacy of excellence […]

[47,1

post-36052","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology","category-uncategorized
["GET
