It is not only the culmination of study, but of years spent searching for answers, confronting uncertainty, and learning to persist when progress feels distant. On 24 April 2026, at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall, Dr Elias Khotha reached that moment as he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), joining the University’s 60th generation of graduates.

Originally from QwaQwa in the Free State, Dr Khotha’s journey into Chemistry was not defined by a single moment, but by an environment that steadily shaped his ambition. Working in a laboratory and being surrounded by scholars who had reached the highest levels of academia awakened something in him. It was not simply admiration, but a quiet decision to pursue more, to deepen his knowledge and contribute meaningfully through research.

“Being around professors and researchers motivated me to put in more effort so that I could also reach this milestone,” said Dr Khotha, reflecting on the path that led him from technologist to doctoral graduate.

That path, however, was never straightforward. Scientific research rarely is. It is a space where certainty is earned slowly, often through repeated failure. Dr Khotha speaks of long hours in the laboratory, where experiments did not always yield the expected results, where progress meant starting again, refining, and trying once more. It is in those moments, often unseen, that the true nature of a researcher is formed.

“Research comes with challenges, but I kept reminding myself that difficulties should not defeat me,” he said, capturing the mindset that sustained him through a demanding five-year journey. Discipline, focus, and the willingness to remain committed even when results were uncertain became the foundation of his progress.

Beyond the laboratory, his strength was anchored in the people who stood with him. Dr Khotha credits his family, particularly his parents, for their unwavering support, noting that his mother’s encouragement gave him the emotional resilience to continue when the demands of the journey intensified. He also acknowledges the role of his academic supervisor, whose guidance and mentorship were instrumental in shaping both his research and his academic growth.

Now, as part of VUT’s 60th generation of graduates, his achievement speaks to more than personal success. It reflects the role of higher education in developing professionals who are equipped to contribute to national progress through knowledge, innovation, and research.

“We need professionals who will contribute to developing our country, and education is part of that responsibility,” said Dr Khotha, emphasising the broader purpose that underpins his work.

Looking back, graduation is not simply an endpoint, but a moment of reflection. For Dr Khotha, it carries both emotion and meaning, a recognition of the years invested, and the challenges overcome. It stands as a reminder that academic achievement is rarely about ease, but about persistence, support, and the decision to continue, even when the outcome is not guaranteed.

In that moment, as he joined the 60th generation of VUT graduates, his story became part of a larger narrative, one that continues to be shaped by individuals who choose to push beyond limitation and contribute to something greater than themselves.

“Dr Elias Khotha graduated with a PhD in Chemistry at VUT, reflecting on perseverance, family support, and research that contributes […]

[47,1

post-36054","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology","category-uncategorized
["GET
