On 24 April 2026, Dr Tebogo Mmamoraga Deborah “Tlharipe” Chauke joined the ranks of doctoral graduates, earning her PhD in Chemistry through research that speaks directly to one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time.

Her story begins in Mohlakeng, Randfontein, but it is anchored in something deeper than geography. It is rooted in heritage and self-understanding. “Ke setlhogolo sa Bakwena, ke mokwena wa ga Molotswana wa ga Sabudi sa metsi,” she says, a declaration that carries both pride and belonging. It is from this place of identity that her journey draws its strength.

At the centre of her doctoral work lies a problem often hidden from public view, the treatment of industrial wastewater. Galvanising processes, essential in manufacturing, produce effluent laden with heavy metals and high chloride levels, substances that pose a serious threat to ecosystems if left untreated. Dr Chauke’s research offers a practical response. By developing a multistage treatment system that combines electrocoagulation with membrane technologies, she has created a solution that is not only scientifically sound, but scalable within real industrial settings.

Her work is not abstract. It sits at the intersection of science and society, where environmental responsibility meets industrial necessity. In this, her research reflects the kind of scholarship that defines VUT’s evolving identity, work that is grounded, relevant, and capable of shaping industry practice.

Yet behind the science lies a journey marked by discipline and quiet endurance. She describes the path to her PhD as demanding, a test not only of intellect but of resilience. Support became essential. In a gesture that speaks volumes about the relationships built along the way, she flew her supervisor from Nigeria to witness her graduation, a moment of shared pride that reflects the collaborative nature of academic success. She is equally deliberate in acknowledging the broader University community, recognising that no achievement stands alone.

Beyond academia, Dr Chauke’s influence extends into industry, where she serves as Group Quality Manager at Premier FMCG. In this role, she oversees nine laboratories across coastal, inland, and international operations, a responsibility that demands both technical precision and strategic leadership. It is here that her academic training finds daily expression, not in theory, but in practice.

Her leadership style is defined not by authority alone, but by development. She creates space for her team to think, to question, and to innovate, stepping in not to control, but to guide. It is an approach that reflects her belief in continuous learning, that knowledge must evolve and be shared if it is to remain relevant.

This journey, she reflects, was never accidental. From an early stage in her life, she set her intentions with clarity. She recalls sharing a list of ambitions with her husband, among them the pursuit of a PhD. It was not a distant dream, but a commitment. “There is nothing that comes easy,” she says. “Once you start, do not give in. Push harder and achieve what you have set for yourself.”

Looking ahead, her focus remains firmly on impact. Having already implemented ISO 17025 standards within her organisation, she has identified a deeper need, the development of structured training that can strengthen skills across the sector. Her plans to create training manuals reflect a broader vision, one that seeks not only to lead, but to build capacity for others.

Dr Chauke’s story is, at its core, a story of alignment, where identity, ambition, and purpose converge. It is a reminder that achievement is not simply about reaching a destination, but about the clarity of the path taken to get there. As VUT reflects on six decades of transformation, her journey stands as proof that when vision is anchored in purpose and carried by persistence, it does not merely fulfil itself, it creates impact that endures.

“Tebogo Mmamoraga Deborah Chauke earns her PhD in Chemistry from the Vaal University of Technology, advancing sustainable wastewater treatment, leading […]

[47

post-36155","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news-vaal-university-of-technology
["GET
