Newly elected Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Student Representative Council (SRC) leaders have been challenged to move beyond election politics and embrace evidence-based leadership, accountability and strategic action following a three-day leadership workshop held in Sandton from 28 to 30 September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop brought together the University’s 2026\/2027 SRC for an intensive induction programme aimed at preparing student leaders for the responsibilities of governance, representation and service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held under the theme “Leading with Purpose, Representing with Evidence, Delivering with Accountability,” the programme introduced SRC members to VUT’s governance structures, strategic priorities, student support systems and leadership expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Executive Director for Student Support Services, Dr Gugulethu Xaba, emphasised the importance of collaboration and partnership in strengthening student governance and ensuring that students are effectively represented and supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting Director of Student Life and Governance, Mr Lucas Mahooa, said the programme was designed to ensure that the 19 newly elected SRC members not only understand the challenges facing students, but are also equipped to develop practical solutions and implement measurable programmes of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop formed part of VUT’s broader commitment to developing capable student leaders who can contribute meaningfully to institutional governance while advancing student interests through established structures and processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the programme, SRC members were introduced to VUT Strategy 2033+, the University’s governance framework and the constitutional mandate of the SRC. Sessions focused on leadership, accountability, student representation, strategic planning and stakeholder engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants also explored key student issues, including funding, registration, accommodation, food security, student wellness, digital access and employability. The discussions encouraged student leaders to adopt an evidence-based approach to representation by understanding student concerns, verifying information and identifying effective intervention strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facilitated by Kuteno Consulting, the workshop challenged SRC leaders to distinguish between leadership and popularity, and between representation and activism. Emphasis was placed on ethical leadership, emotional intelligence, responsible decision-making and collective accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student leaders were further exposed to strategic planning tools, environmental analysis and problem-solving techniques aimed at helping them navigate the complex challenges facing higher education institutions and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key outcome of the workshop was the development of a 100-Day Action Plan, which requires the SRC to translate its priorities into practical interventions during the first months of its term. The plan identifies immediate actions, medium-term priorities and accountability measures that will guide implementation and performance monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop also introduced a structured reporting and review framework designed to strengthen transparency, monitor progress and ensure that commitments made to students are translated into measurable outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the conclusion of the programme, the SRC President, Mr Carcidio Khoza said the workshop had provided valuable insights into student leadership and representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The training was insightful and ignited the spirit of advocacy matched with activism. We experienced a paradigm shift in how best we can resolve issues, make meaningful changes and challenge the current status quo.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop marked the beginning of the new SRC’s term of office and provided a foundation for student leaders to engage constructively with students, management and external stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equipped with a deeper understanding of governance, accountability and strategic planning, the newly elected SRC now faces the responsibility of turning its commitments into meaningful action that enhances the student experience across VUT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
