The Occupational Health and Safety Law 3 students attended a safety presentation on Tuesday, 8 October 2019. The purpose of the visit was to expose students to fire extinguisher equipment that is used in the industry and prepare them for the work environment.
The informative nature of the induction benefited the students since it exposed them to the fire extinguisher equipment that is part of their Occupational Health and Safety Law 3.2 course.
The parts of fire extinguisher equipment training that the students found interesting were: the hands-on approach in the use of the equipment; understanding the different types of fire extinguishers that are suitable for different types of burning media; and understanding a fire rating based on the volume of fire that the fire extinguishers are capable of extinguishing.
The lecturers believe that student participation on site visits helps them to understand the operations of fire extinguishers and the need for safety personnel in the workplace. The lecturers would, therefore, like to thank the Safety Department of VUT and Vaal Triangle Fire Service for the assistance and demonstration of the fire extinguisher equipment.
