The Charity Football Tournament, organised by a group of PR B-tech students which took place at Isak Steyl stadium on 16 September 2017 was a resounding success. The tournament was created to raise awareness of the ongoing fight on violence against women, championed by POWA (People Opposing Women Abuse).
Four football teams (Metro Stars FC, North West University (NWU) Vaal, Vaal Milano FC and Vaal University of Technology (VUT)) competed against each other in this tournament. VUT was off to a good start, obliterating NWU Vaal 6-1, scoring 5 goals within the first half. Despite the high number of goals VUT did not play as well as they normally do.
The finals were a battle between Metro Stars FC and VUT. Mr Molefi Oliphant, Former SAFA (South African Football Association) president and Mr Aaron Mokoena, former Bafana Bafana and international footballer greeted the players and wished them good luck for the anticipated match. The game was tight with none of the competitors able to score, resulting in a penalty which VUT won 5-3.
The tournament was well attended, spectators were entertained with music and performances by the VUT dance and aerobics teams.
VUT SPORT would like to acknowledge the sponsors without which the event would not have been possible:
