In a prestigious certificate awarding ceremony held on 25 April 2024 at Quest Conference Centre, in Vanderbijlpark, the Institutional HIV and AIDS Unit (IHAU) of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recognized peer educators’ outstanding achievements in combating HIV and AIDS within the University community.
“In life, you are celebrated for your contributions, not for the duration. You are here because you have contributed to the movement of this institution, and congratulations,” remarked Mr. Rakgomo Mokole who was the guest speaker for the evening, offering a powerful message that resonated deeply with attendees, capturing the essence of the occasion and the value of the peer educators’ efforts.
Thapelo Kgakatsi, IHAU Project Officer emphasized the importance of the the Unit in pushing HIV/AIDS efforts throughout the institution. He stated that the Unit coordinates and implements HIV/AIDS programs in compliance with the VUT HIV and AIDS Policy, the National Strategic Plan on HIV, STIs, and TB Policy, and the Strategic Framework on HIV and AIDS for Higher Education in South Africa (Higher Health 2019). The section is also in charge of handling the Higher Health Grant and coordinating psychosocial support and civic education initiatives.
To acquire the certification, candidates must meet the criteria, including completing their Peer Educator appointment, reaching the grant fund agreement’s targets, and displaying full responsibility and attention to their job. This certification significantly contributes to the professional development and career advancement of the recipients. Along with the certification, they receive a letter of recommendation that highlights the abilities they learned and developed during training and program implementation, placing them well for future opportunities.
Peer educators, Sharmaine Mokalapa and Tlankiso Sebambo described their experience as nothing short of transformative. “Being smart is the new cool,” they added, emphasizing the empowering nature of their journey.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all the individuals who were certified during yesterday’s ceremony.
