The Departments of Residence Living and Learning, and Student Life and Governance at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) recently organized the Residence Market Day, a platform for students to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and sell their products and services to their peers. The event aimed to encourage students to embrace entrepreneurship and provide them with the necessary support to start and sustain their own businesses.
This initiative had several key objectives which include motivating students to start their own businesses, equipping them with essential business skills and knowledge, teaching students how to sustain their businesses. The event also discussed ways on how to bring in companies and organizations to provide business acumen and support to students and helping them understand what it means to be an entrepreneur.
The Residence Market Day was a resounding success, with 10 student entrepreneurs coming together to sell their products and services. One of the banking giants, Nedbank, also joined the market and sponsored the event with t-shirts.
One of the organisers, Mr Sipho Nkosi, by implementing some of the recommendations put forward to improve the event, it can continue to grow and provide even more support and opportunities for VUT students to develop their entrepreneurial skills and start successful businesses.
The Residence Market Day has been described as having ignited a spark of entrepreneurial spirit within the VUT student community, and with continued support and guidance, these young innovators will become the driving force behind South Africa’s economic transformation.
