VUT’s Department of Social Justice and Transformation received a student disability bursary to the total of R307 075.25 from Armaments Corporation of South Africa SOC Ltd (ARMSCOR).
ARMSCOR is the acquisition agency for the Department of Defence and the bursary is allocated to students in the field of engineering and any related fields. It will be divided among six students.
The bursary assists in covering the following: registration and tuition fees, residence accommodation, meals allowance, required books and necessary special equipment.
The Department of Social Justice and Transformation Disability Co-ordinator, Mr David Nkwekwezi said, that it was necessary for the department to help disabled students to receive the award. He said that the bursary will assist disabled students who are in need of special educational equipment to learn easily.
One of the bursary holders, Mr Samkelo Maduna, studying ND Biomedical Technology at VUT said: “I am very excited to receive the bursary for it will help me a lot in my studies. Sometimes it is very difficult to study without financial assistance. Since the bursary covers all my fees it is easy for me to study and I will study hard so that I can receive the bursary until I finish my course.”
In conclusion Mr Nkwekwezi said: “We as VUT are lucky to hold the bursary, it is within our student capacity to work hard and maintain the bursary for 2018.”
