As the Spring graduations commenced on 10 September, eight (8) students have been conferred with Magister Technologiae in Chemistry from the Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences.
Kopano Mokubung, Zondi Nate and Obakeng Nchoe are three of the eight students that shared their fruitful journeys. Kopano Mokubung hails from Balfour in Mpumalanga. He arrived in VUT 2011 and enrolled for a diploma in Analytical Chemistry of which he finished within record time and enrolled for his Baccalaureus Technologiae (B-Tech) in Chemistry. B-tech he passed with a cum-laude.

In 2016, he then registered to do Master Technologiae (M-Tech) in Chemistry. On this day, this year 2018, he shared that he feels proud to have accomplished his dream. He dedicates his qualification to his late mom who passed away when he had just started writing his dissertation.
He says he will pursue his PhD next year as a full-time student. His dissertation title is: Amino acid-capped metal selenide nanoparticles: their synthesis, characterization, optical and magnetic properties, supervised by Professor M Moloto and co-supervised by Professor N Moloto.
Zondi Nate who hails from Katlehong, Zonkizizwe worked on the dissertation titled: Green Synthesis of copper and silver Nano-particles and their Antimicrobial activity, supervised by Professor J Moloto and co-supervised by Dr P Mubiayi and Dr D Sibiya.
He says that his journey has been great, he learned a lot and his supervisors have also been great throughout the journey. He is enrolled with the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal to study towards his PhD. Living by the quote: “proper preparation prevents poor performance,” he is now looking forward to what the future has in store for him and hopes to come plough back to Vaal University of Technology (VUT), as a lecturer one day.
Obakeng Nchoe described his journey as being an awesome one and. “It is through the support of my family and friends and VUT staff members that I now stand proud and overwhelmed by the fact that I have just attained my third qualification”, he said. He also shared that he will also stay in the academic environment and pursue his doctoral studies.
“In victory or in defeat we always look ahead,” is one the quotes he lives by and has pushed him to achieve what he has achieved today, he said. His dissertation is titled: Synthesis, characterization and application of amine-modified Macadamia nutshell adsorbents and iron imprinted polymers for the sequestration of Cr (Vi) ions from aqueous solution, supervised by Dr V Pakade and co-supervised by Dr M Klink.
