It was first established as the Food and Nutrition Research Centre (2005), later evolving into the Institute of Sustainable Livelihoods (2006), and ultimately becoming VUT\u2019s first Centre of Excellence in 2010. Currently, the CSL reports directly to the Office of the Executive Dean of Human Sciences, although it is housed at the Science Park Campus of VUT.<\/p><p data-start=\"651\" data-end=\"1214\">Research at the Centre for Sustainable Livelihoods (CSL) has focused on poverty, malnutrition, and household food insecurity in rural (n=4), peri-urban (n=2), and urban (n=2) communities in the Vaal region, Qwa-Qwa, and the Cofimvaba District in recent years. A number of baseline surveys conducted in Eatonside, Bophelong, Boipatong, Sharpeville, Orange Farm, and Qwa-Qwa have centred on the key research question: to what extent do micro-mechanisms, such as household food gardens, influence the food security, nutrition, and health of residents in these areas?<\/p><p data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1809\">Findings have revealed that poverty, household food insecurity, and the risk of malnutrition are the most pressing challenges facing these low-income communities. The close relationship between CSL and these communities has led to a research programme that is both relevant and actionable, with a strong emphasis on the implementation of clinical trials to combat malnutrition (through school feeding and supplementation projects) and to foster innovation in food product development. Additionally, several food gardening initiatives were launched to address chronic household food insecurity.<\/p><p data-start=\"1811\" data-end=\"2186\">These initiatives have received significant financial support from the National Research Foundation (NRF) (2000\u20132012), the South African Netherlands Partnership in Alternative Research in Development (SANPAD) (2007\u20132012), the United States Potato Board (2010), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) (2013\u20132014), and the Oilseeds Advisory Committee (2014).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div id=\"e-n-tab-content-2643044052\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"e-n-tab-title-2643044052\" data-tab-index=\"2\" style=\"--n-tabs-title-order: 2;\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3028459 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"3028459\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9789d80 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9789d80\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Among the strategies implemented by the CSL in recent years were:<\/strong><\/p><ol data-start=\"265\" data-end=\"965\"><li data-start=\"265\" data-end=\"411\"><p data-start=\"268\" data-end=\"411\">Health promotion, specifically nutrition education programmes for target groups\u2014namely children, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly;<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"413\" data-end=\"532\"><p data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"532\">Addressing household food insecurity by implementing a sustainable household vegetable and soya gardening programme;<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"693\"><p data-start=\"537\" data-end=\"693\">Developing affordable and energy-saving manual household and industrial soya food processing equipment through the exchange of knowledge and technology; and<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"695\" data-end=\"879\"><p data-start=\"698\" data-end=\"879\">Evaluating the impact of this programme on food and nutrition knowledge (short-term) and dietary intake behaviour (long-term), as well as household food insecurity in the community;<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"881\" data-end=\"965\"><p data-start=\"884\" data-end=\"965\">Using technology to formulate healthy food products through extrusion technology.<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p data-start=\"967\" data-end=\"1100\">All the above objectives were and will be implemented by pairing actual community needs with postgraduate academic research projects.<\/p><p data-start=\"1102\" data-end=\"1628\">All research undertaken in the CSL is expected to result in significant scientific impact, demonstrated through publications in accredited (n=49 since 2002) and other peer-reviewed (n=26 since 2002) scientific journals, as well as postgraduate qualifications (n=33 since 2002). Moreover, it should have sustainable effects on the development of low-income rural communities\u2014specifically in relation to food security, and the nutritional and health status of children, their caregivers, and elderly people in these communities.<\/p><p data-start=\"1630\" data-end=\"1888\">This aligns with international priorities such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and national priorities, including rural development, access to affordable health services, and food and nutrition security.<\/p><p data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"2523\">Activities undertaken by the CSL also support the South African Integrated Nutrition Programme of the Department of Health (DoH), which aims to promote the health of women\u2014particularly pregnant and lactating women\u2014reduce the prevalence of malnutrition in children, combat hypertension, obesity, and diabetes mellitus among the elderly, ensure optimal growth in infants and young children, and build capacity at all levels to address household food insecurity and its adverse effects. Furthermore, it seeks to reduce malnutrition and hunger and enhance inter-sectoral collaboration and community ownership of programmes and resources.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div id=\"e-n-tab-content-2643044053\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"e-n-tab-title-2643044053\" data-tab-index=\"3\" style=\"--n-tabs-title-order: 3;\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1410ea4 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"1410ea4\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a05269 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4a05269\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"195\" data-end=\"217\"><strong data-start=\"195\" data-end=\"217\">CSL has cooperated<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"219\" data-end=\"573\">A key contribution to the success of the CSL has been the capacity building of postgraduate students and local community organisations. This has resulted in the creation of sustainable links between the CSL and various community organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), funding agencies, and national and international academic institutions.<\/p><p data-start=\"575\" data-end=\"775\">Furthermore, the following international links with food and nutrition researchers\u2014who assist the CSL with postgraduate supervision, article writing, research support, and expert advice\u2014remain active:<\/p><ul data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"2980\"><li data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"1022\"><p data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"1022\"><strong data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"805\">Ms Cade Fields-Gardner<\/strong>, a dietitian specialising in community nutrition and HIV\/AIDS, from The Cutting Edge in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America. Ms Fields-Gardner visited the CSL on 20 April to discuss future projects in Africa.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1341\"><p data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1341\"><strong data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1047\">Dr Rozanne Kruger<\/strong>, from Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand. Dr Kruger is a nutritionist specialising in community nutrition and dietary diversification. She visited the CSL from 7\u201323 May for article writing and again from 20\u201326 September to participate in the Soy Seminar and Workshop hosted by the CSL.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1343\" data-end=\"1520\"><p data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1520\"><strong data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1365\">Dr Folake Samuel<\/strong>, a nutritionist from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Dr Samuel visited the CSL from 21\u201327 September as a guest speaker at the Soy Seminar and Workshop.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1522\" data-end=\"1728\"><p data-start=\"1524\" data-end=\"1728\"><strong data-start=\"1524\" data-end=\"1542\">Mr Jim Hershey<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1568\">Mr Josh Neiderman<\/strong> from the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH), USA. Mr Hershey visited the CSL from 24\u201326 September to participate in the Soy Seminar and Workshop.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"2084\"><p data-start=\"1732\" data-end=\"2084\"><strong data-start=\"1732\" data-end=\"1752\">Prof Mary Murimi<\/strong>, a dietitian specialising in community nutrition, specifically mother and child nutrition, from Texas Tech University. Prof Murimi visited the CSL from 5\u201310 January to discuss collaboration. She also presented an article-writing workshop to 23 researchers and postgraduate students from VUT, UNISA, and North-West University (NWU).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2086\" data-end=\"2346\"><p data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2346\"><strong data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2110\">Prof Symon Mahungu<\/strong>, Professor of Food Chemistry at Egerton University, Kenya. Prof Mahungu visited the CSL from 21\u201327 September to participate in the Soy Seminar and Workshop, during which future collaboration on the soy research programme was discussed.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2348\" data-end=\"2562\"><p data-start=\"2350\" data-end=\"2562\"><strong data-start=\"2350\" data-end=\"2374\">Prof Craig Gundersen<\/strong>, Executive Director of the National Soybean Research Laboratory, University of Illinois, USA. Prof Gundersen visited the CSL and participated as a speaker in the Soy Seminar and Workshop.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2564\" data-end=\"2720\"><p data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2720\"><strong data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2596\">Prof Wilna Oldewage-Theron<\/strong>, Professor of Nutrition at Texas Tech University, USA. Prof Oldewage-Theron was the founder and former director of the CSL.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2722\" data-end=\"2980\"><p data-start=\"2724\" data-end=\"2980\"><strong data-start=\"2724\" data-end=\"2745\">Prof Roberto Pilu<\/strong>, Associate Professor at Di.S.A.A. \u2013 Produzione, Territorio, Agroenergia, Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences \u2013 Production, Landscape, Agroenergy, Universit\u00e0 degli Studi di Milano, Via Celoria, 2, 20133 Milano, Italy.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2982\" data-end=\"3595\">The international links established by the CSL align with the VUT strategy for internationalisation. Its specific networks across Africa can lead to collaborative projects in which CSL\u2019s successes can positively impact the continent. Africa, however, faces unique challenges such as poverty, food insecurity, malnutrition, and health issues. Therefore, it is vital to network across the continent to mobilise full capacity in addressing these challenges. Involving international students further increases capacity across Africa, while South African postgraduate students benefit from this international exposure.<\/p><p data-start=\"3597\" data-end=\"3670\"><strong data-start=\"3597\" data-end=\"3670\">Collaborations with South African institutions include the following:<\/strong><\/p><ul data-start=\"3672\" data-end=\"4902\"><li data-start=\"3672\" data-end=\"4087\"><p data-start=\"3674\" data-end=\"4087\">A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the Department of Food and Nutrition at the <strong data-start=\"3763\" data-end=\"3804\">Durban University of Technology (DUT)<\/strong> and the CSL to develop South African food-based dietary guidelines for the elderly (July 2012). The agreement, valid for three years, included a visit by Prof CE Napier and Ms H Grobbelaar to the CSL from 21\u201322 October to analyse data collected with Prof WH Oldewage-Theron in 2014.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4089\" data-end=\"4300\"><p data-start=\"4091\" data-end=\"4300\">A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the <strong data-start=\"4140\" data-end=\"4148\">CSIR<\/strong> and the CSL (May 2013) to collaborate on a school feeding programme implemented in Cofimvaba, Eastern Cape. This DST-funded project ended in June 2014.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4302\" data-end=\"4511\"><p data-start=\"4304\" data-end=\"4511\">A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between <strong data-start=\"4349\" data-end=\"4359\">Nestl\u00e9<\/strong> and the CSL (April 2014) to collaborate on the <strong data-start=\"4407\" data-end=\"4423\">Healthy Kids<\/strong> nutrition education programme implemented in Hammanskraal, effective from 2015 to 2016.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4513\" data-end=\"4688\"><p data-start=\"4515\" data-end=\"4688\">A <strong data-start=\"4517\" data-end=\"4548\">Memorandum of Understanding<\/strong> was signed between the <strong data-start=\"4572\" data-end=\"4626\">CSL and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)<\/strong> regarding collaboration in human nutrition and food security.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4690\" data-end=\"4902\"><p data-start=\"4692\" data-end=\"4902\">A <strong data-start=\"4694\" data-end=\"4714\">Letter of Intent<\/strong> was signed between the <strong data-start=\"4738\" data-end=\"4771\">CSL and Texas Tech University<\/strong> for possible data exchange and joint implementation of projects focused on food and nutrition security in South Africa and beyond.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CSLU Stay connected with our vibrant community through a variety of events hosted by the Faculty of Human Sciences.
