Dr. Tara Walmsley is the Team Leader of the Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology Research Team, and a Senior Lecturer specializing in Applied Biotechnology. She is focused on applied microbiology and biotechnology in five strategic areas: sustainable agricultural systems; advanced water treatment and environmental monitoring; bioremediation of contaminated environments; green energy production, and the optimization of bioactive plant extracts. This positions her at the interface of applied microbiology, environmental science, and biotechnology, with a strong emphasis on translational outcomes relevant to South African ecological and agricultural challenges. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t

Teaching & Training<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Dr Walmsley t<\/span>eaches Applied Biotechnology Modules I and II a<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0the Postgraduate Diploma\u00a0<\/span>level, and<\/span>\u00a0is the co-ordinator of the PGDip Biotechnology Research Project<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

Dr Walmsley is a member of the Biotechnology Program Teaching and Learning Quality Committee (PTLQC) and the Faculty Research Ethics Committee (FREC).<\/p>

Postgraduate Supervision & Mentorship\u202f <\/strong><\/p>

Dr Walmsley is the\u00a0Research Leader of the Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology Research Group \u2014\u00a0comprising\u00a0PGDip, Masters, and Doctoral candidates. Her current research includes:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

  • Indigenous and medicinal plant barcoding (with a focus on the Highveld and\u00a0Vredefort\u00a0Dome region)\u00a0\u2013 to support the South African Biodiversity\u00a0initiative through curation on the Barcode of Life Database System\u00a0and\u00a0establish\u00a0protocols for the\u00a0accurate\u00a0identification and monitoring of medically\u00a0relevant\u00a0plants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Isolation,\u00a0characterization\u00a0and\u00a0biocontrol\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>C. sativa\u00a0<\/span><\/i>fungal pathogens\u00a0\u2013 to support the growing\u00a0<\/span>C. sativa<\/span><\/i>\u00a0market in South Africa\u00a0(with future projects focused on other medically relevant plants and their potential pathogens).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Development of inoculant-based\u00a0agricultural products\u00a0to support plant health\u00a0and growth\u00a0\u2013 in support of the shift towards sustainable agricultural practices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Enzymatic production of biodiesel \u2013 in support of the green energy movement and waste\u00a0valorization.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Fermentation\u00a0optimized\u00a0plant extracts for application in plant and human health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Advanced water treatment with a focus on the role of applied microorganisms as a solution to the increasing threat of water scarcity,\u00a0industrial\/urban\u00a0pollution\u00a0and\u00a0emerging contaminants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

    Outreach & Impact <\/strong><\/p>

    Beyond academia, Dr Walmsley actively contributes to the Parys Wetland Park, a community-led urban wetland restoration initiative, leading environmental education and monitoring activities that foster scientific literacy at the community level. This engagement has provided a grounded perspective on the compounding environmental challenges of small urban centres, including cumulative pollution and limited remediation resources, and the impact of these challenges on local communities and the wider environment.<\/p>

    Innovation & Applied Projects<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

    Dr Walmsley is focused on the application of microorganisms in solving the agricultural, environmental and health challenges faced by South Africa as a country. Her research projects are designed to generate products and\/or processes that are translatable to both industrial and community settings. Her focus is on observational science that leads to the identification of issues faced locally and works towards the development of products and\/or processes that are scientifically rigorous yet simple, affordable, scalable and effective in resource-constrained settings. She is actively involved with the Technology Transfer Office for IP, Patent and Industrial Scale-Up strategies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
